After participating three times at the Siggraph art gallery for my serie about Mouvement, i submit you my last work (in wip category), all made in Lightwave(no 3rd party), if you are interested about printing the final rendering for Siggraph please contact me : [email protected]

I feel the contest is finish, but i'm not sure?!

Here i send you my last work in progress, i used a rigging structure to make pose inspired by the Kerry Dancer rig. I make 3 models who are repreasenting Goddess, i create a black marble texture to do it, trees have the same texture but the only difference they have a bump with wood texture (it was hard to find the right orientation). All texture are procedural lightwave texture.
One other point in the scene there is only one light aera for now.
After my update it can change.
I will continue the composition, and i will finish with how to express divinity with rendering...( a program)
Feel free to give all the comment or advice you want,
Alain

What do I know?
It's an attractive idea and image, but it's also a bit of a tangled mess at the moment.

You have stick figures with stick trees behind them, with everything a similar tone and texture.

Like I say, it's a good idea and the image has alot of potential right now, but I think you need to concentrate on separating the figures from the background alot more. Whether that's with DoF, or lighting, or both, or whatever works.

I agree with you, there a lot of disorder, but my idea is not to use glowing thing or things with a lot of depth of fields, i would like an energic composition with tension. Maybe there is too much elements, that's a question. There is a lot of work to do in this order. Here is an update

Here is an update. I try to make more depth with colour, tiny depth in it, but i'm not sure about it.

What do I know?
That later one is looking good with the new colour, but I still think you need to be alot more radical about separating that background out.

Here is an update, to finish the 3d still i will focus myself on the background, first i will try to do something with procedural, if i have not enought flexibility i will use my rendering to create a background in Photoshop.

Thx, the noise filter do nothing, there is micro bump and antialiasing with blue noise with a real lens camera.
I find this composition spiritualy very strong, it fits well with th idea of Goddess
If people like it i may stop here and do other view about Goddess

You need a lot more anti-aliasing. Look at the hair on the goddess in the center, by her right cheek - very jagged. It's very noticeable there, but really it's all over the image. Even if you can't pick it out explicitly, the whole image will look a lot better with full aa. Especially since it's just a still, if it takes an extra hour who cares! Then compare it to the earlier renders, you'll see what I mean.

What are your current setings?

(and blurring is no substitute for good aa btw)

edit:
Actually what's bugging me is just like JB was saying, the noisy detail in the trees and background is overshadowing the relative smoothness of the foreground subjects; it grabs your eye more than the goddesses do.

my current antialiasing is 0.15 classic real lens, but will it be noticable if i do a render at 8000x6000 pixels? Some people told me an antialiasing between 0.02 and 0.08, but my rendertimes skyrockets... I only have a bi-3Ghz pentium, and i will buy a new one soon, it's too hard to do good work with it, too time consuming.

Mine is older/slower than that, 2x2ghz. But too much aa is ten times better than not enough, I'd let a still render an extra day if I was concerned about high quality. Do you mean 0.15 adaptive threshold? That's generally a very low-quality setting, but I don't know enough about print resolution work to comment. You could ask the on the Print forum too -

Here is an update with post render effects in Photoshop. I would like oppinion of people about the second one, i work too much on it, so i am blind now about it, i feel there a problem with the middle aera, maybe too much brightness compared to other aera. Oppinion?

Here is my final render for this Contest. I've done it for hight quality art print.
I hope Newtek will consider it for exhibiting it at Siggraph?! Considering i've done 3 exhibition at art gallery Siggraph, they may consider my candidature a bit more ?! But i don't know if they have an artistic feeling or a technical feeling, it's the artist that make a software good, take the example of Meats Meier.

I wait and see if they are interested.

What do I know?
This is looking much better. As to the Photoshop post-processing on the background, my first thought on seeing it was just that - it's been fed through Photoshop! That's no offense, by the way, and it does not detract from the image, but perhaps it doesn't separate your post work from alot of other stuff we see like that.

I have a terrible habit of pointing out the Photoshop lens flare to people, ad nauseum, whenever I see it.....if you want to wind me up, show me a commercial image with a Photoshop lens flare plastered on it :D

I like the surfacing on the three goddesses now, that looks good, and you have separated them sufficiently off the background I reckon.

But my gut sense is that the tree/stick-type background still doesn't complement your portrayal of those characters.

But that's being very arty critical about it.....mind you, I went to an exhibition last year that included some Monet paintings.....I thought they were crap, so what do I know? :D

Have you tried using linear fog, black, to control the lighting?

You could say...leave the foreground objects in the light and setup fog to darken the trees and background enough to pull them away from each other.

Right now, still better than the first image, everything blends together too much.

2D is so Flat!
sorry tghe noise filter did nothing , you can also try using blur reflections like at 5~15% might do the trick especially on the wider angles.
