OK, I Have a small problem, where are the config files stored for 2020 ??

does the switch work for 2020 ??
"C:\Program Files\LightWave_2020.0.3\bin\Hub.exe" -c"C:\Program Files\LightWave_2020.0.3\bin\Programs"

I close down the Hub, Layout, Modeler, and when I open them they forget there settings?

well I have nothing in the Users\.newtek\lightwave\2020.0.3 folders there is nothing.
the Lic.lwk file is in the lic folder.
and that's it, absolutely nothing else in the other folders
I have always used the switch
why does it not work on 2020.3 ??

interesting

Problem solved........

OK I figured out why I could not get the configs to save to the folder.

"C:\Program Files\LightWave_2020.0.3\bin\Layout.exe" -c"C:\Program Files\LightWave_2020.0.3\bin\Programs"

The File was read only, had to redo the permissions, man windows is a pain in the rear end sometimes.

Problem solved wahoooooo, now to get stuff setup

Problem not solved. Problem made infinitely worse. 😉 Do not modify your configuration to be in the system's program files location. Do not modify the permissions of your program files location. There are very good reasons why it should be read-only. Windows is trying to save you from more pain in the rear.

Why do you need to save your configuration data in the program files location? If this is really necessary, copy "C:\\program files\newtek\lightwave xxxx" to "C:\\lightwave xxxx". Then uninstall LightWave. The copy of "C:\\lightwave xxxx" will still work because LightWave is portable. The portable copy of LightWave will support the custom configuration you save to it.

The reason was that 2020 would not remember anything, settings, paths, display settings etc etc...

Open the hub, start layout, load scene, modify scene, change a few camera settings.
Send object to Modeler, modify a few things, save LWO.
Shut it all done....

Reopen Hub, Layout and load scene, whammo Layout was back to defaults settings, did not know the last scene loaded.
Had to reload plugins, and reset Content Directory..... etc etc
Could not find the problem .. Support suggested a few things, they did not work...

After a half dozen times of dealing with the stupid stuff 2020 was doing ...... I made the Config ......

And 2020 is working great now...

LW 2019, LW2015, LW 11 all working great...

The Only folder I did permissions on, was the Config folder that's it.
Where I store the Lay, Mod, Hub cfg's.
All other folders are still at there existing permission.
Been doing it sense before 2003, and have had no issues.
I do not plan on using 2020 in mobile mode.

Why are you opening the Hub first.....?
Open Modeller or Layout and the Hub opens automatically.

I have saved configs in the LightWave application folder in a Preferences sub-folder for as long as I remember (as detailed in the manual).

well I was doing both, open layout and the hub would open... cool that works.. shut it all down..

Then..

. open hub, to tell it do not shut down, then open layout.. because the hub would default to 1 minute that's why..

:)

The manual doesn't detail that.

As a Mac user, that tilde in the file path refers to your own personal home directory, not the program installation. That's just like the C:\\users directory on Windows. Mac OS actually implemented stricter rules about writeability to program folders before Windows got around to it. All systems are the same.

Zapper1998 would have been fine if he didn't set any custom configuration location on his program shortcuts. Everything in this situation was needlessly complicated because of that.

For those that choose custom configuration locations, beware that setting custom configuration should be done to all 3 LW programs (layout, hub, modeler). Some of this configuration, especially for hub.exe is hiding in your configuration folder in one of the configuration files.

The manual doesn't detail that.
Apologies, it must be in the LW readme, that shows following installation.

Edit: it is only for the Mac version

To modify files in C:\Program Files you may need admin privileges..
So, RMB on LW and pick up "Run as administrator".
If after closing LW, files are written (yes, they are written at the end of LW, not in the middle of session).
Therefor, if app crashes, config files may be not written.
There are kind of crashes, which does not generate crash report i.e. stack overflow.

Therefor it is a bad practice to put anything in C:\Program Files... that is why e.g. Documents folder was created..
