How does shader noise reduction work?

I'm using the raytracing functions inside a pixel filter plugin to allow me to generate spherical projected images for use in a QTVR-like project. I need a special plugin as I need lighting & depth information inside of a proprietory file format.
This all works fine until I render scenes with area lights in them. At this point, if I have 'shading noise reduction' turned on I get a nice image output from lightwave, but the image in my special file still contains all the shading noise that area lights produce - which I kind of expected would happen.

Does anyone know how "shader noise reduction" works in Lightwave, what techniques are used or of a way to use the ray tracing functions so that I export the nice noise reduced image.

Anyone got any code that does this????
