Fine tune your background rendering (Advanced)

If you haven't Tuned your background rendering, go read that thread first.

This is for the hard-core nerds among us :D

There is a super secret way to make highly detailed BGR (see, I told you to read the first one) presets that go into more detail than you ever imagined.

First, in your filebin navigate to where you installed SE, then into Skins\BG Render Profies.

For example, mine is at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\NewTek\SpeedEDIT2\Skins\BG Render Profiles

You will see quite a few files with names that show up in preferences as BGR profiles.

Click on the one you are currently using for SD projects (a good starting point) and copy, then paste it back into the same location to duplicate it.

Rename the copy to something you know.

Now for magic...Right click on your new copy and select Properties.

You will get a massive list of settings. Change the Profile name to what you want to see in the list in preferences, close the window.

Do the same for the one you use for HD projects (new name obviously), then close SpeedEDIT.

Reopen SpeedEDIT and your new profiles will be listed as options in Preferences.

Continued in my next post...

There are two ways of tweaking these settings, by weight and by maximum value.

I've never been comfortable with weight, so I'll address only the max. It works well for me and is easily explained.

Leave computer speed at 100% and each of the weight sliders at 0.0.

For each item listed, Max is the number of playable items of this type that can be played at any given frame.

If the frame contains more than this, BGR will kick in.

Some that are non-obvious are:
Transitions VS DVEs - DVEs are in the DVEs folder and are prerendered SD just like VT5 DVEs. Transitions are in the Effects/Transitions folder and are completely different as far as SE is concerned. These are not used in the VT switcher.

Milliseconds to wait before BG rendering - when you make an edit, SE waits this long before it starts using system resources to BGR. Does it seem sluggish? raise this value. waiting too long? lower it

Don't change the number of force render effects. Why would you want to add more than one to cause it to render on purpose?

There are a few settings at the bottom of the list that are just generic file assets such as creation date, etc. They have nothing to do with BGR, they are just properties of this profile like any other file on disk.

Have fun,

Oops, I screwed up...Can I claim that it's a first? ;)

Here is the path to mine:
C:\Program Files (x86)\NewTek\SpeedEDIT2\Skins\BG Render Profiles

I'll update the post, thanks for pointing it out.

I'm having difficulty comprehending the difference between:
"Does it seem sluggish?" and "Waiting too long?"

My brain is frying. Help! Somebody!

If it BGRs with no delay, just as soon as you release the mouse button, the extra CPU usage can make SE feel sluggish to me.

If it waits too long, say 2 seconds, then it's wasting CPU cycles and will take longer for BGR to start. This is waiting too long.

It's hard to describe how the UI feels unfortunately, that was my best attempt.

Oh. OK. -- That's an excellent clarification, John, of what I somehow imagined *may* have been your intended message, but the similar wording for each scenario left me with a lingering sense of doubt.

Thanks for the help.

Hi John. How do you access the sliders for settings adjustment? I don't see them anywhere within the Speededit Preferences gui.

Copy, paste, rename and then right click to properties in Windows Explorer? I didn't get any sliders or settings options at all.

... maybe I should be using the SE Filebin... I'll go check.
