FBX Importer and Unity

Hey All!
I am trying my luck with some Unity Characters. My simple goal (so I thought) was to import the character, make some changes to the model and then export it back to an FBX for Unity. However, it seems like all the rigging information is getting lost along the way. If I import the character into Layout, it lies on it's side and the standin- rig is facing the wrong way...
Anyone got a good process for handling this sort of task in LightWave?
