3D Sequence appears Stuttering in VT-Edit

Hi Guys,

Having followed the instructions of the related tutorial I have proceeded to test the Ammo pack "Photo Album Turn 1 Coffee Table" with original clips inside a PAL project.

All the clips are set to interlace odd field first but after rendering the actual animation looks very stuttery.

I have tried, though it is not mentioned in the tutorial, to change all the images settings included in the sequence to interlace but the result is the same.

Obviously if I double the speed of the sequence it looks smooth but that is not the point.

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

I'm a LW novice with 3DA and LW7.5c (I have LW8.5 on the VT I use). What I found to improve things for PAL use was to follow the guide in the NewTek-Europe package but also to add the anti-aliasing on the camera properies. I recall that Don makes reference to aliasing in the web/swf/camtasia tutorials provided.

I'm using a 1080p50 setting, I don't have any interlacing set in LW but without anti-aliasing it appears to render (even via a stills format) with dogs-teeth or interlacing artefacts. I suppose it may be because I'm using an old LW7.5 at a 'new' HD 1080 resolution but it doesn't make sense against what I see on the render options panel or on the camera properties.

I often compare 3D animation to that of a software developer's language+compiler. So I figure most folks would work around this issue and move on. It may be a bug though, but LW has moved on. I'd like 3DA's documentation to explain how it fits in a LW9 world. Then it might make some sense for me to upgrade to LW9 at some point.....

Antialiasing (or extra AA) was the secret remedy for me anway.
After rendering out TGA I use SpeedEDIT to create 1080i50 from the final print.

The other important part for me is that I render out TGA and use my NLE to wrap this against a timeline for itself. PAL D1 is field-ordered like MPEG-2, ie UFF. Often digital video is assumed by other NLEs to be LFF as per all DV25 (DVC) formats. A video format out of LW may not convey the field ordering in the encapsulating format's header (either at all, or perhaps not correctly). That might account for stutter if your delivery format is messed up as you describe there Maz.

Thank you for the message. In the meantime during testing, I discovered that VT wants UFF Tga files and that resolved the stuttering problem.

I guess what you meant for "1080p50 setting" are the settings for SpeedEdit ? :confused:

So your TGA files are progressive and you use SpeedEdit to convert them to 50i. Why not starting off with 50i in the first place?

I guess this way you have a 50p sequence in case you ever need it as well as 50i?

I haven't installed my VT5 yet as I am planning to do that on a separate drive as soon as I have the time so I am currently working with VT4.6.

Yes, 50p is required for my work in case the client needs a still image or has a non-interlace platform he needs to deliver on too. Interlacing has to be a technology that we'll laugh about having once been forced to use. Well, one day hopefully sooner rather than later..... :)
