1001 ways to use LW and Blender together

Also in World-Machine...you can add your own svg shapes form inkscape or illustrator to use when you filter the the shape generators, there are the standard Rectangle, Circle, polygon, path etc..but next to that you have a small button I/O, from there you can load svg files, dxg, which means you could also create paths, vectors in 3D software as well.

So you could trace paths from a real road, and much much more to create filter shapes that raises or lowers the terrain.
I just tested with a simple shape from inkscape, so it works, it first came in as a small vector shape so I have to figure out the best scaling, but you can locate the shape once imported and right click and rescale it, and the shape as svg format, are available inside worldmachine to tweak it´s bezier handles to change the shapes form as well.

this info should however belong to the newly created Terrain Generators thread.

Nice.

Yes, you could probably use open streetmap and get svg directly for whole areas of a city, maybe clean it up in illustrator or inkscape, before importing as map to world machine, just a thought, how well that workflow would be, I have to test.

LW logo simplified, the erosion is taking place on top of that initial shape, so this is something you can´t do with just standard displacement really.
It is probably possible to mask out the erosion on this shape with other filtering nodes, so it will be a smooth elevation without any break ups.

I suggest to use two viewport layout as seen in the middle image, lock the output to the world view so you can tweak your shapes and masks with it updating fully at the final output with erosion.

last image a round star shape which isn´t that pronounced.

Beautiful !

nice texture too.
That was the simple world-machine quick texture desert preset,
Below a tiny change in feature emphasis, which makes the erosion lines push through more.
and in lightwave, some additional slope curve nodes...

But I have a lot of learning to catch up on that area.

This is Good !

Thank´s, nice to share stuff, but I wasn´t supposed to do 3D today, I was supposed to be cleaning after my wild New years eve party.
And besides, I have to be careful, soon some guys will attack me for mentioning world- machine ..in a 1001 ways to use LW And Blender together.

So I think it will have to be enough for today and also try to maintain a decent day night rythm.
Goodnight Erik.

Re Blender plugins..

On Blender Market and Gumroad a lot of the listings for Blender plugins don't seem to obviously specify Windows/Mac/Linux, so I was wondering if there is some magic Blender language where I can just assume they are just cross compatible, or if I need to search for the small print... Many thanks. :)

Just don´t screw around, make it simple and safe, us a Con...Ehum, use windows only :D
The question while a bit desperate thinking we lower class Lw users knows that much, could be spared to the blender forums.

Despite me trying to be a comedian as displayed above :poop:... I have honestly not given that question a thought, and from my part I can reply just to recognize your question but not really able to answer your question, Rayek maybe is the one you could get in touch with here, or post on the blender forums.

Good luck.

Python - it is integrated deeply within Blender.

Thanks Prometheus and Tim. I did take Prom's advice and put the question on Blender Artists forum, and a user responded (I believe a 'Waver) saying pretty much what Tim said, and thus to assume cross compatibility unless otherwise stated. Great help chaps, thanks. :)

(y) What I think is really cool about Addons in Blender is that they can remain as .Zip files on your HD. I've never seen that before.

Not sure, you install them from the zip, but I think it somehow unpacks it anyway before execution, maybe stored somewhere, if not I would find it odd how it could read a zip file with any good speed for a plugin to work smoothly inside the software, considering unpacking it surely must be a must, but just guessing.

Yeah I don't know how it does it. I download the zip file to my Blender Addons folder and from there just install the .zip directly from the Blender preferences. If it unzips in a folder somewhere I have no idea. I can't find any of them anywhere on my system. :)

Most addons are platform agnostic, but there are a few that make use of OS specific binaries that are called from the addon in Blender. Unless it is specifically stated however, only make sure the addon is compatible with the correct Blender version. Sometimes (like LightWave) an older version of Blender is required to run a cool (but defunct and no longer developed) addon.

But that is not an issue, since older versions are readily available, and do not need to be installed - rather run from their folder.

This is another reason why discussing Blender here is silly. It is like blind leading blind. Just sign up for a Blender forum and immerse yourself in expertise.

ZIP archives are extracted. Blender does not run addons from ZIP files. When you look at your addons in Blender preferences, it shows the file location of each addon. The addon is the extracted PY file. The information displayed for each addon is what I would hope LightWave would do with plugins, scenes, and objects. Management and licensing of assets would be a lot easier if LightWave plugins, scenes, and objects included author and rights information.

Blender forums are too Blenderish. :) I like my Blender news and questions addressed in the LightWave forums where you find LWer's using Blender to supplement LW. ;)

hehe yeah, specially when you use terms that every lw'er knows...that are jsut called different things in blender...their eyes just gloss over cause they have a hard time translating.

Awww, that reminds me that I need to get a replacement part for our blender. I miss my kale/blueberry smoothies...
