Change the viewport display to Wireframe and you can de-select them.

You can also click in the gray area around the screen or hit the / key.

Once you select some points and let go of the mouse button to deselect simply click on the points with the LMB or lasso with the RMB. To add to the selection do the same but hold down the shift key.

This won't help you deselect the inner points, but once you have the selection just how you want it, you can make a selection set so you only have to go through the pain of a difficult selection once.

As for deselecting the middle I'd do what Toby and Larry said. Switch to wireframe mode, zoom in on the left side and lasso select (RMB) the points on the inside leaving the outside points alone.
