Fanboys and gadflys CAN'T coexist, since by their nature they each take extreme viewpoints.

Essentially, the Fanboy and the Gadfly are natural enemies and have no interest in coexisting, preffering to either ignore each other, or engage in full force.

The fanboy might occasionally agree with the gadfly, but will always fall back on defending his position..."just because".
The gadfly might occasionally agree with the fanboy on a matter of principle, such as, "yes, I love it too, which is why I want to see improvement, which I'm not seeing.", but will always be contentious "just because".

But again, it's because they're each taking an extreme viewpoint which allows very little room for compromise on either party's side; by definition the gadfly is the eternal pessimist, while the fanboy is unrealistically optimistic.

However, normal people who are simply looking at the reality of a situation without any particular extreme bias can agree, disagree, argue and discuss any topic, and coexist perfectly well, provided they don't try to provoke the other through insults and otherwise derogatory comments.
Normal and realistic people possess the traits of both the fanboy and the gadfly, but in a balanced way.

Fanboyism is not synonymous with support and optimism, neither is Gadflyism simply thoughtful criticism; each are extreme positions which exist simply for the sake of provocation.

Support and optimism, pessimism and realistic criticism are neutral concepts when used in the absence of unrelenting bias.

    Something like that.

    that's a pretty accurate take.

but it's complicated tremendously by the fact that each side sees ITSELF as moderate and reasonable. each side is blind to its own extremism or bias. : )

and each side sees the other as being intolerant to difference of opinion.

lol... the human condition. oh well, at least we're doing it without rocks, molotov cocktails and ak-47s....

but yeah, the assertion seems correct. no possible peaceful coexistence. either war or ignore.

Such is the nature of the beast.

It's interesting to note it's likely the Gadfly and the Fanboy are not creatures too far-removed from one another in terms of personal philosophy, just diametrically-opposed.
And yes, extremism will always fail in recognizing anyhting but its own agenda.

Strangely enough, it's easy to equate a forum insult with a molotov cocktail through your window, or even a flaming bag of sh*t on your doorstep. But, yeah, it's cool we don't go shooting each other.

Peaceful coexistence requires compromise. Neither the gadfly nor the fanboy wants compromise... but at the same time they both rage against war, while agreeing that to ignore is... weak.

    Yes... the human condition.

A story with a boy, a lake and a yellow flower that bows its head down towards the water comes to mind.

I was thinking more along the lines of dragons, trolls, lakes of fire and evil kings, but everybody sees an unwritten story in his own perspective.
