do you need a server to distribute screamernet nodes?

No, any machine you may have can act as the server, in fact most users use their slower machine as a ScreamerNet "server".

The only time you'd need anything "server" related in a SN farm is if you have more than 10 nodes. At that point you reach the max number of connections that are allowed to a MS desktop OS's file sharing service. All you have to do is move your fileserver to a Linux or any Microsoft Server version of windows. An off the shelf NAS would also work just fine.

And even then all that machine has to do is be a file server. All of your ScreamerNet C&C can still be on any machine in your network.
