Thread: faster rendering

  1. #1

    Thumbs down faster rendering

    we need a faster antialiasing.
actually Lw seems to be the slowest renderer.
ex: 3 min for a radiosity frame in Pal D1 (with 1 thread)
    with Emedium AA > ~ 27 min.
    + fieldrendering ~ 40 min.
    for 1 frame....
    16 hours for 1 second in 25Fps
sure, the rendered image is beautiful.
    but....hmm, wow.
Same kind of picture in 3dsmax: ~5 min.
sure, the rendered image look more plastic than the lw one.
    but...i'm diseapointed.

so we need a scanline renderer or a pixelFilter Antialias.
    a screamernetable Surface baker.
and i will be very happy if i can use Image filter plugin with Fieldrendering. (just for glow and bloom)

Well what are your settings/comp/mo-bo/ram ect... and how many apps do you have running in the background...

I mean, just hitting the render button and leaving it at that is asking for long renders.

I don't find the generic renderer too bad, but anti-aliasing, area and linear lights seem incredibly slow to me too.

And I nearly always use them!!!

    nice results though!

but other renderers are pretty close to LW's quality, if not supassing it, so we NEED an bit update to keep in the running.

hopefully it's no too far away now.

Well, i render lw scenes everyday for tv since seven years.
generaly, my settings are optimized to get the fastest image.
but sometimes i need refraction, radiosity, sas, hypervoxels, sometimes i prefer to multipassrender and compo etc...
everyday is different, but everyday i'm thinking about a faster AA.

so my comp is a Bi P4 2.2Ghz Xeon Supermicro 1goram, and i have 9 other same computer for render with TequilaScream.

    Wait.. why one thread?

one thread coz i'm using screamernet,
    1 proc render 1 frame.
with more thread, 1 proc of the rendernode is waiting the other one in some case. (sas, hypervoxel, etc...)
of course, i'm using 2 or 4 thread when i'm working on station.
    good night.

so we need a scanline renderer or a pixelFilter Antialias.
Lightwave is a scanline-raytracing hybrid renderer.

    Hi there,

I also would welcome more rendering power and speed for LW. I don't have a problem with the AA algorithm - it produces nice results once you find the correct settings. In other areas LW sometimes just behaves a bit "dumb" or clings too much to mathematical/ physical correctness.

A good example are area lights, where LW uses a fixed number of rays for the entire light no matter how you size it (other progs use adaptive rays on a ray per square meter basis). Also other progs use some gaussian filtering (or blurring) to soften area shadows - LW tries to achieve this effect with rays only.

I think once they give up on this premisse they will get the renderer to work a lot faster. So give us adaptive volumetrics, smarter radiosity etc.

Lightwave also uses filter to soften area shadows. You just need to check the shading noise reduction option.
