    What is envolved creating DVD?

I got new workstation and with it DVD RW.

So the question is what is involved to do a video dvd.
What are the tools and their prices and how the process goes
    out of Lightwave.

    Any comments welcome.

    Software:

    Expensive but good:
    DVDStudio Pro 2 for Mac
    Adobe Encore for PC

    Cheap but good:
    Ulead DVD for PC

The authoring of DVDs isnt really that complicated and you should do fine just reading threw the manual.

the only other thing you have to know is when your rendering out of lightwave you use the same resolution and aspect as DV.

    720X480 @29.97fps, 0.9 aspect.
    ------------------------------

besides that, other apps you should look into are mpeg2 encoders.

The best one is only available for the mac (IMO)
    BitVice http://www.innobits.se
For the PC there is also a really good app you may allready be aware of TMPGENC http://www.tmpgenc.net/

    Well thank you alot.

    What about comptability with TV.
When you plan to broadcast. We have PAL 720x576
25fps. I think it is important when rendering not to do double
job but use same output for many purposes.

    Again i thank any comments.

You would not want to use a DVD as a source for broadcast material just as you would not want to use a jpeg image for print work since they are both highly compressed formats that throw away much image data (lossy) during the compression. DVD video is really an end user format, not one that you want to use during production. But as a final distribution media its fine.

All the suggestions above are good. I'll just add that all Macs come with iDVD which is also a great entry level DVD program.

If you've got some extra cash go for the Glass Master.

    all you need

is Nero (which probably comes with the DVD burner) and TMPG Author.
