    Smile Heads or Tails WIP

Here's a WIP thread for an animation project I'm working on named Heads or Tails. It picks up where my recent blog post Creating Normal Maps from Photographs left off. I'm using this project to explore bullet dynamics. It will also be along the lines of my previous project: Trick Shot Video.

I'm in the process of created a layered series of bullet simulations. I'm creating the first bullet sim and saving it out as an MDD. Then loading that back in and creating the next bullet sim. I've noticed a discrepancy with how the MDD is affecting axes for surfaces in the node editor. After running the bullet sim to spin and tip a coin all the surface axes move and reorient along with the coln. However when I load the motion in as an MDD the surface axes for the image and normal nodes move and reorient along with the coin, but the axes for the ani-reflection node don't. This causes the coin to render differently when it's controlled by the original bullet dynamics vs the MDD.

In this image the coin on the left is at the end of a bullet dynamics sim. The one on the right is the same coin with the dynamics removed and re-applied by saving and loading the MDD. Notice the ani-reflection has changed, but the normal relief image has not. They are both set to use the Y axis. The Normal uses a planar projection on the Y axis and the ani-reflection node uses cylindrical mapping on the Y axis. The image and normal nodes retained the Y-axis between the Bullet dynamics and MDD but the ani-reflection has changed. Since I haven't used MDD's much I could be missing something. Anyone know of anything I need to do for them both to work? I'll investigate further and try switching to use UV's... This is in LW2015.3 BTW.

Use UV mapping. You can test to set your mdd position to local instead of world and see if that helps. You can also duplicate and replace the original with a null and have that as a texture reference.

Yes I'm going to try UV mapping it today. I had tried local vs. world but that just moved the object off screen. I had thought of a null reference, but it needs to animate along with the MDD animated coin rather than just at the end (I only posted the frame from the end.).

I understand why it might not work at all because the MDD is displacing the points while leaving the object pivot where it started. The main question though is why does the projection mapped Y-axis work in the image, image layer and normal nodes but not in the ani-reflections node when using MDD?

Here's an initial animation render test of my first attempt at Bullet Dynamics. This is not yet using MDD, as I'm still refining the motion and surfaces/textures, but it's a start.

Here's a new test render from another shot in this animation project - Heads or Tails.

    Feedback welcome of course.

Thanks really clever ... and well done. Just trying to see if you have any hidden leprechauns in the scene or not!

Thanks! This was really just the very first test render with the base objects and initial textures/lighting to serve as a conceptual starting point for this shot. It will be refined and improved as I work through the animation. Keep your eyes open for any such hidden gems as I continue to flesh it out.

Here's another minor update. This should be the last update of this still shot as I move back to work on the animation. Next proof should be a rough animation test.

Most of the plant models are from XFrog’s free plant samples and VizPeople’s free grass samples. I refined some of the models and surface textures for what I needed.

    Well done, Scazzino!
    Thanks!

Here's a new test. This one has some refined timing on the stacking coins, more coins and a rotated background to try more subtle lighting/reflections. Which lighting effect do you like best? Stronger or subtler and why?

I probably like the first lighting because it has that contrast with the back reflection, but I'm most impressed with the behavior of the coins, the spin and vibrations, is it just dynamics or are you doing something special? Both lighting set ups look very real.

I like the increased life of the first one too, if that's of any help
