the eyeholes aren't receiving Silhoutte Edges, although other smaller features are.

Why might that be? The eyeholes are definitely silhouette.

    works here..
try do a simple setup first and test on that to make sure your system seem to work ok, then you may need to check your scene what may interfere with it all and track it down by removing stuff till the bones only is left.

if it is a subd mesh try freezing, it could be that the physical subd edge is behind the hole so not visible to the camera

I could think of another reason, my sample was a complete water tight mesh, meaning it had thickness ..if the smiley sun with eyesocket is just a cut out on anotherwise thin object, it may not be able to work..I noticed my siloutte edges vanished when it tried remodeled it to a thin hollow object.
So just try run thickener on it..it may help.

May not b necessary to thicken the object, if you check unshared edges..together with silloutte..it may work too.

    try sharp creases as well
also check smoothness settings on the surface panel, the amount of degreeness affects the outline inkingness

That shouldnīt be needed, it related to smoothing ..but isnīt needed really, unshared edges if the object is thin, if you thicken the object all you should need is silloutte edges, I doubt that will do anything for the edges around the socket.

Good suggestion. I'll let you know.

UNSHARED EDGES did the trick, although of course it'd be nice to know why one edge works and others don't.

rusty, I was too chicken to freeze the mesh: I'm a coward! --Maybe later.

As I donīt know, did you model the shape without thickness? in such case shared edges is needed, if you thicken it however.. then I donīt think unshared edges is necessary, but itīs kind of hard to tell from an image only.
Donīt think freezing is needed, sillouette outline should follow whatever subpatch there is without the need to freeze it.
