Unhappy fiberglass-strands to solid object question

Ok, I'm not an expert, not a noob.

I hate "drawing a blank", but I can't seem to figure out the best way to approach this project. I will eventually need to animate strands of fiberglass going into a mold and being extruded, but for right now I really need some pointers on the best way to create a model that looks something like the attached sample (in less than 2 years). I know I can manually create/model the strands, but I think that might get a little tedious and also be tough to animate....

I've already got an extrusion, at the top.

Any help would be a greatly appreciated....

I would think that Sasquatch would be ideal for generating the fibre strands. You should be able to pull them though a Die as well, I'm not sure that you would be abe to do it with the lite version though.

    Sorry don't know the answer.

I was looking at this Pin Array tut last night. It's probably not the answer but might spark some ideas.
