I'm told that, in the programming community, there's a tradition of using short nonsense words, traditionally "foo" and "bar" (from "fubar", I suspect) as placeholder names.

Given the several places in the LW/LWM ui where the space where one might expect to see the entire object name clearly displayed, that AREN'T, I'm wondering if there's a lot of test objects in the dev offices that have names like "bar001.lwo" and "foo12.lws".

If one can't display common labels, there should be facilities like "hover help" or "hover popups" to allow long names to be seen by the user, should there not?

    Agreed it needs attention.

To refine a solution for this, an idea for when not hovering is to elide the middle of long words.

For the case: "IK test object: Finger"

    Use: "IK test...:Finger"

    Instead of "IK test object..."

Eliding the middle is a useful technique for identifiers whose beginnings or endings change frequently.

Excellent point, ncr. In general, I'd expect the the END of the name to be the thing that which distinguishes it. I believe that's where most people put their version numbers and/or timestamps.

re: the problem: It's disappointing because it's User Interface Design 101. It's weak. And they've known about it for years.
