    Tyrell Corp Building Blade Runner

Here are some screen caps of a work in progress for the Tyrell Corp Building from Bladerunner. I did one many years ago but now have better reference material and a better rig.

She is hefty when loaded in as a scene, probably around 15-20 million polys. Thank god for instancing in LW now. The slope building is finished mostly and now finishing the pyramid building. I wont use the whole model for an animation im thinking of but need to get in very close. However i decided to do the whole thing as there is allot of repetition and i may release the model later.

    C& C as always welcome

It looks great to me. A lot of the look was the entire scene.

What are your render times like?

    Somewhere, over the rainbow....

Never rendered it yet. I expect them to be horrendous, they were on my last model and that was not as detailed as this.. There are no texture maps only procedural's and gradients. Will need to UV map and bake textures to make it a little easier to manage render wise. At moment the Sloped buildings are 1.3 Million polys and i expect the Pyramid building to be about 8 million poly's. So the fully loaded scene would be around 19 million polys. I do not need it all, but i need to get close. But as allot of it is repetition and mirroring i thought i would build the whole thing and maybe release it later.

Some more updates, progress is slow because of other work but its getting there, mostly the greebles and stuff. Sloped building is 99% done, just the pyramid building to finish now.

Oh and someone asked me do you really need that level of detailing, surely the real model did not have that much. Well a pictures says more than a thousand words can

I remember there was a spinner scene in the early LW content, and the building was part of that scene, heavily hidden in fog and lens flares.

Remember the scene well. I still have it somewhere. For its time it was a great scene. I'm hoping that when finished this will be as close to the real model as a digital one can get. Having said that the full building consisting of 1 Pyramid Building and 8 Sloped buildings will weight in at around 28-32 Million polys.

Once released then everyone can have a go and see what they make of it. For me this is a homage to the original model makers skill and whilst i will make some renders for me its the model and accuracy that counts. I would say its probably 80% accurate.

cool, I remember sitting in the cinema and going, wow..when I first saw the opening scene´s over a future Los Angeles 2019, and that wonderful moody sizzling vangelis music, together with the fire plumes shooting up in the air.
almost 5 years to go and I think Los angeles will not be that polluted and rainy and will not have such types of buildings, it was an exciting scifi-travel though.

Try build the rest of L.A too

Thanks prometheus, actually the "Hades Landscape" as it was called was fairly simple, mostly acid etched brass plates as was much of the facade of the fronts of the Tyrell building. They built individual bits and then made molds. Very much like greebling and nurnies that we do today but digitally.

Whoah... very impressive amounts of detail there!

How are you coping with the modelling though? I struggle with 5 million polys when it comes to moving things around, so god knows how you're dealing with that.

    I'm using a Quadro k5000 and it's still slow.

Modeling is ok at the moment im building 1/8th of it then rotate, mirror, rotate back, mirror x, mirror z, then add a few things that are not the same on each mostly on the top. 1/8th at the moment will be around 2 million polys, so the full building will be about 16-20 million polys for the Pyramid building, and 2 million polys for each of the eight Sloped Buildings, although these can be instanced.

Guys, if you haven't gone over to Douglas Trumbull's (sp?) website and watched the 'making of' BR, you're really missing out.

That guy has had a FUN life.
