Lightbulb Rail Clone: which poly gets ALIGNED? / FReq, and suggested workflow

AFAICT, the dox don't address this:

When using RAIL CLONE on an object (like a box, vs a single poly) with the ALIGNED option checked, there doesn't seem to be any provision for allowing the user to designate WHICH polygon is used for the alignment process.

While ALIGN works fine for single polys, it seems to be ignored for more complex meshes. (EDIT: I take it back, it failed in this sample file. RailCloneFailure.LWO -Use LYR1 to Rail Clone LYR2. )

    Is this true??

If true, then I suggest a new workflow for RAIL CLONE, in traditional LWM fashion: the first poly selected serves as the basis for the ALIGNment process.

Without reading the manual this is what appears to happen: in LW11.6.1 there is "oriented" and "align to start" options. "Align to start" doesn't align a specific polygon, but it moves the pivot point of the object (0,0,0) to where the spline starts. Whatever is on the +X side of the object will be to the right of the splines initial direction. And +Z will be forward. When checking oriented every clone is rotated so it's original +Z direction is forward on the spline.

Perhaps it is otherwise on earlier versions?
