found this 2005 tutorial on Smart Skinning in Layout, by Mike Green...

looks to be the best native LightWave method, might be of use here (?)

For those who've purchased, how long did it take to get your license file after sending in the registration email?

I want to say it took around a full 24 hours or maybe even a bit more, but I also did my registration on the weekend.

If you try to do this in zbrush you get poor results. You can join these vessels together using zbrush's dynamesh feature. But dynamesh does a very bad job with the tips of the vessels.

    Now that's hot!

You can say that again ;-)
Don't have the money (or the need) for the tools ATM but they look really nice.

Cool to see such stuff come out more again for LW!

    Cheers,

    you might have seen this...

then i though, hmm, can MetaMesh do the same? can MetaMesh kick it?

could one of you guys give it a try? uploading the model here...

Metamesh can kick it but not quite to the same extent mesh fusion does. Mesh fusion has the advantage of tree editing, using mesh presets and also most importantly, editing the strips where fusions take place.

Here is my try with your object. I had to add some more geometry because metamesh only works with quads and tris. It won't work with n-gons.

That video is impressive. But I wanted to see how they can adjust the size of the rounded join between two intersecting objects. They only show very thin sharp joins between the objects. It is funny that they did not highlight that important feature in the video. I wonder if that Meshfusion tool does not produce good results if you make the join area wider.

    thank you for testing lertola2..!

the more i look at Mesh Fusion, the more i wonder if it can create very smooth results.
after watching the video a few times, it seems the edges it makes are quite hard and narrow...

hm, maybe there is no easy way after all...

testing some old-fashioned "manual" methods now...

Also, did you try testing metamesh in combining several shapes over the same area? I notice in the meshfusion video that they have several overlapping Boolean cuts to create some of the more complex shapes. I just wonder how meshfusion handles that since it forms a lot of trigons at intersections.

That's not that bad at all...if they can get HeatShrink+ to re-skin the resulting Boolean object and create better seams/polygon flow..they could be onto a winner.

    Just saying :P

The Groboto tech is powerful and allows multiple booleans which are non destructive. This looks like it's integrated into Meshfusion. So you might intersect a cylinder with a cube and a ball and switch between the subtract / union functions or freely adjust their position in space. Subtraction meshes are ghosted out with booleans updating in realtime. Groboto users have been hoping for the software to be updated to allow meshes to be imported. It's still a great add on to Lightwave.

yes, last time i asked them the answer was > "Not very soon..."

was hoping for something more from MeshFusion / Groboto...

now it'd be King if MetaMesh could be updated to make nice retopology,
but i guess that is easier said than done...
