    Modelling Challenge

    Challenging all you point pushers....

    I'm busy trying to create a lotion bottle.

    This bottle has some rather tricky curves and I need some advice on how to get the best results.

    I'm posting a zip file showing the lower half of the bottle ( trickiest to resolve ) the rest I've managed to complete.

    As you can see from IMAGE-001, I have two main curves, CURVE-001 and CURVE-002 made from the same number of points.

    Although CURVE-001 has a different shaped radius to CURVE-002 ( hilighted as red outlines )

    Both curves need to conform with RAILS - 001 and 002 if I'm to create a successful shape.

    IMAGE-002 demonstrates the polygon mesh I have managed to generate so far. I'm using splines to outline the undulating surface area.

    Unfortunately I can't use these curves to generate a spline patch. It simply doesn't work well, I think the RAIL-001 complicates the mesh generated.

    So I'm left with taking RAIL-001 as a guide and for each point on the curve copy and paste CURVE-001 moving it to the next point all the way down to where CURVE-002 starts.

    Off course at each transfer of CURVE-001 I have to alter the points to transform CURVE-001 into CURVE-002 by the time I'm at the bottom of RAIL-001.

    Are you getting this...

    Anyhow I then copy the points to another layer and create each and every polygon by hand the resultant mesh IMAGE-002 is then SubPatched.

    At this stage ( at least 20 attempts to get this looking right) the mesh kind of looks alright, however when you render it in Layout you get flecking on the surface.

    See IMAGE-003. Now I don't have any extra polygons or points I've checked over and over again. I just think my approach is causing the resultant mesh to fleck when rendered.

    So can anyone help? I've read about "nurbs curves" and possibly think this may hold the solution to this problem, am I right?, do I have to buy more software?

    Or can someone suggest a better process, may be a pluggin or script that can loft two Curves along two rails?

    depending on the level of accuracy required here - I personally would attack this one with Metanurbs...

    Thanks for your speedy reply, that looks really cool. I'll look at your object file over the weekend and see if it will work with the shapes I have to create.

    Then I'll get back to you on the results.

    Just checked the link above and found it doesn't seem to work, must be something I've done wrong. The page is there it's 202k in size and will take about 29 sec on a 56k modem...

    Andy, my man, I feel your pain! I used to use AutoCAD and went to school to be an architectural draftsman. I consider myself more of a draftsman than an artist. I really miss the precision of AutoCAD. I read through your artricle and the whole time I was thinking, man, I bet this would be a lot easier with Rhino. Thought it was pretty funny when I got to the end! I played with Rhino a little bit not long ago and am keeping it in mind for future use when I want a detailed, accurate model. I still love LightWave though, and will always come home to her.
