# Thread: Golf Ball

1. The ">4 Verticies" are NGons... NGons are polys with more than four sides, just fyi.

2. Thanks. Getting used to all the terms as I am fairly new to LW.
Still cannot get this golf ball to look correct. This would be a great tutorial for video.

3. Getting used to all of the jargon and lingo will take a little while. You'll get it in time though. You might find it useful to go through some of my free video subd tutorials. They are very basic and go through some little projects:

Hi Stephen, I just went through this procedure and seemed to work pretty well. Hope this helps. I attached an image of the finished result in modeler.

1. Default ball tessellated level 6.
2. Select all edges.
3. Edge bevel numeric value 25mm.
4. switch to poly mode, "W" statistics.
5. Select >4 vertices.( the little + sign)
6. Bevel numeric 2mm.
7. Select Spikey tool and apply.
8. Select points.
9. Contract points.
10. Shift "H" numeric 90%, apply.
11. Shift "D" select metaform, apply.
12. Subpatch level 2.

Ok I increased tesselation level to 7 and made small adjustments on the numeric values and followed the same procedure. I think this is closer. You can get the dimples closer together by making slight adjustments in the modeling steps.

I'm not sure. Try deleting you configs for modeler , restart modeler and see if that helps. I use the default menu settings and I have the menu in question. Maybe Chilton could chime in.

10. Againd, simple brain working, where is the Configs file? I assume it is in the Lightwave 9.6 folder somewhere.

If you are using the UB version, I believe the default prefs are in user/library/Preferences/LightWave3D.

Be sure to follow the 12 steps I posted earlier, next you must select all edges and perform edge bevel, you should then have >4 vertices.

14. Also, I noticed that LW does not really create true perfect tessellated spheres. All of the triangles are not the exact same shape and size. This causes the golf ball not to have consistent dimples. If you look at all of the above examples (not photo) you'll see an inconsistency in the dimples.

I noticed that as well but that was about as good as I could get a subpatched ball. There are only a few dimples off so it's not too bad.
