NewTek's paint package Aura (only available with VT 5.2) will read them fine. So will TV Paint & Mirage.

There's still an .IFF loader knocking around for Photoshop, and one for the free image viewer, Irfanview.

If you're really stuck, just set your .IFFs as a Background Image in LightWave and render out with appropriate res and no anti-A to any other format.

The free Irfanview image viewer also loads IFFs. I don't know how comprehensive it is (e.g. if it does HAM or Halfbright images).

I've lost ALL my old Amiga stuff because of this. That or a knackered drive, not sure, but none of the disks I tried worked.

I managed to save my Atari ST artwork using a disk reading program and XnView (free). Then converted them to .png. XnView also does .iff and all the Atari formats.

I also saved some C code using the disk reader.

The tricky part about XnView is you need to dig inside some setting to enable the old formats. For some reason they are there, but disabled.
    Formats read 474, write 63.

    A drive

my Windows XP computer will not read the disk. It wants to format them first, so the programs mentioned above wont work.

Atari disks use a similar formatting to IBM, so that emulator worked.

Use Google: "reading amiga disks" you will see some info there.

    http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/13-118
    http://www.amigaforever.com/tutorials/migration/
    http://www.amigaforever.com/dataconversion/

Read thru that, you will need a working Amiga for some of those.
There is also a conversion service assuming you dont mind sending them to Italy.

I suppose if you had access to a working machine that could connect to the internet you could FTP it to a website then pull it down to your IBM and change the format.

IFF means Interchange File Format. And current LWO is example of IFF file. How to read IFF you can find in f.e. LWSDK.

If you meant images, they're IFF ILBM which means InterLeaved BitMap. It has header chunk, optional color map chunk, and body chunk with indexes to color map or true color. Compression can be none, or run length, depending on header info.

Any LightWave reads IFF, it has loader in Plugins\input-output\iff.p
so you should be able to load it in Image Editor and save as anything else, I suggest PNG, to not loose precision.

    @pdp editor

If you mean you inserted Amiga 3.5' floppy disks in your PC then Windows machines can't read these disks unless you have this.

Use the LW image viewer. Load your image in LW (Modeler or Layout), from the Image Editor double click on the image file name or in the preview and save in the desired format.
