Nike Shoe spot. 9.5 + FPrime

This is a spot I worked on with Oh Hello out of Seattle.
The shoes were provided by Nike in Maya format, and I converted them to Lightwave format where I surfaced, lit, rigged, animated, and rendered the spot.

It was a really fun spot to make because the only directive was to make the shoes "look good", and beyond that they gave us free reign.

We only had three weeks from concept through delivery, and I was the only guy on the production side, but everything worked so smooth between the client, Oh Hello, and myself, that I didn't even have to pull a single late night. I definitely credit a lot of that to Lightwave for its ease of use.

I wanted to try out the 9.5 renderer on this, but I didn't have much rendertime left at the end to learn about the new radiosity features, so I surfaced everything with layers and rendered in Fprime.

I'd never animated people, or a shoe, or anything like this, so Dan and Nate shot a bunch of reference video of them doing jumps, spins, and hops and I just tried to match it as best as possible.

The original spot is 720p, and when I get the full res version I'll re-upload it.

Here are a few big frames I did early on to see if I could make the shoes look real. This was before Dan came up with the moving floor idea.

    Damn cool! Frontpage stuff!

Chalk up another one for Lightwave ^^

Glad to hear there are such clients out there

Great to see this. Good work.

My only crit (I always have to critique) is the shoes seemed a little stiff, would've liked to see more bounce in them.

Sorry, but to me this looks like a bad rip-off of the Adidas Mechanical Legs commercial by David Fincher. That Digital Domain did in 2003 if I am not mistaking.

Here is a link of it: http://www.digitaldomain.com/play_vi...on=commercials

They used LW on it as well!

... and please don't take this as criticisms at you CG work!

Ha! Yeah it does look like a rip off of the Fincher piece for sure. Thanks for the link.

His is obviously on a whole different level than this one. I'd give my left arm to have a piece as good as his on my reel.

It is just a coincidence, though, as I didn't hear about the Fincher spot when we were brainstorming on what to do with this. SPARQ shoes are for drills, so naturally we wanted to show them doing drills. I couldn't actually animate people doing drills, so we just did the shoes. Doing drills on a static floor (like the still renders) wasn't that exciting so we decided to make the floor move.

I suppose its inevitable that collisions will occur between old concepts and new, and its a bit unfortunate that this spot resembles the other one (at least in spirit), but in the end it was just a few guys trying to make shoes look good, and this is where we ended up.

Thanks to the rest of you for your kind words.

I can see the similarities, but rip off?... I still think it has a different feel. Just my opinion though.
