Anyone been hit by the $8.50 FedEx Additional Handling Surcharge when using a hard case?

I just noticed they ding me on every case most times I ship, which adds up.

Never had that happen, or at least have never found it on an invoice. In most of my situation, the dimentional weight is what gets charged and if there is a call tag involved there is a fee for pickup. Have you talked with Customer Service at FedEx? They generally are very good with giving clear explanations and often adjusting invoices when something is incorrect. There often is weight limit for shipments and putting everything in a hard case can raise the actual weight pretty quick.

Seems pretty arbitrary. With the same case sometimes I get hit, others I don't. Mix of Kinkos drop off, scheduled pickup and requested pickup. Charged to our account, so they can add it later, if I paid cash in the Kinkos I bet it wouldn't happen.

I guess you have a solution that will work for you then. I have, as I said earlier, never been charged extra for a hard case. They actually seem to prefer it, offers them less possibility for a claim and your equipment probably will arrive in good condition. You know, the old "Win-Win" situation.
