I have been able to perform surgery as well as visual paintings with the flexibility enclosed in the software.

    Workaround's Rule

Have you ever taken any dupe layer, then Luma key -.5+ and gotten a sudo alpha layer?

Sounds good, I'll have to try that.
Newtek should advertise it and other workarounds, as new features and re-release 1.5 as 1.8

"...minus point five plus"? I don't get it.

Without adding previously-announced new features at the minimum -- renaming SpeedEDIT 1.5.5 to 1.8 would be cause for some serious consternation amongst end-users, don't you think?

I think Kilo concept is a good idea. Experimentation with the setting would have to take place.

My flash of illuminated thought made me aware that very many SE user's really haven't pushed the software anywhere near it's limits and it really is a Swiss Army Knife. There are things you can do with SE that are undocumented because Newtek never foresaw the applications, or documented them. Like the knife, with a bit of imagination and thinking outside of the box, you can actually accomplish many the things that don't have distinct buttons, or shortcut keystrokes. Kilo described this revelation in his idea post.
Especially after reading the feature list of Vegas 9 and realizing that a lot of what they are introducing as features are already doable in SE and it comes down to the engineers and marketers to point out all of these capabilities. This is a communication skill that takes a marketing specialist to accomplish.
Also on another recent thread about rendering selected regions... everyone here jumped into a discussion about workarounds when all the time it was possible to set the in and outpoints of the render in the render window.
Yes there are limits that certain people have run up against that can't be worked around without additional sofware. These obstacles may be removed in future releases.
My point is, if a list of undocumented features based around workarounds was compiled, Newtek could release the list and to most users it would appear to be an adequate upgrade release until us users finished exploring these new possibilities.
A tad deceptive but not immoral

Herein lies the gist for me: it is a piece that isn't complete. Lots of great ideas but it ain't done. And that's not including what was promised.
I'm sure you would be surprised as to the ways SE has been pushed by some. I would be too.
I think that's why we come out of the woodwork with the thoughts and feelings we have. For those that miss it I'm imagining that their perspective hasn't offered them such a view.
And as to being able to label 'undocumented' stuff and relabelling for resale as an upgrade, I believe many of us believe this may have already occurred. Another reason for angst.

I'm not sure undocumented features is so much the right term, as capabilities that come from using a specific work-flow. Workflows usually aren't heavily explained in product manuals so much as in training courses and tutorials. Tutorials are a chicken/egg thing as with a larger user base, more users create them, and since they help folks accomplish their goals with a software package, the more there are, the more people understand its capabilities, and the more users you get.

No disrespect, but comparing the feature set in Vegas Pro 9 to SpeedEDIT 1.5.5?!? Really? I don't think so.

Yes, I agree some have pushed SE a lot further with workarounds and undocumented features, but is that really what the typical user should have to do or will do? No.

More importantly, when I look at the features, all I see is SpeedEDIT playing catchup, and not doing a very good job at that.

For instance, I look at the list of features promised a year ago for the next SpeedEDIT by Jim Plant, CEO of Newtek. Those are the same "new" features still quoted as coming soon. The new SpeedEDIT is not out yet, and other NLEs have announced or released new features since then.

And there is not a single feature listed there for the next SpeedEDIT that hasn't been in Vegas and I am sure most other NLEs for years.

    Really, not ONE feature.

At one time Newtek led with new features in desktop video, that is clearly not the case in SpeedEDIT.

Sure, there are some features each NLE, including SpeedEDIT, can do better than others. But there are plenty of fundamental features that all NLEs really need to do, and that is where SpeedEDIT falls short. Being that all the new features are what other NLEs already do, that proves my point. The "fundamentals" are what is currently missing in SpeedEDIT.

And don't forget that SpeedEDIT is the only professional NLE I know of without ANY bundled DVD/Blu-ray authoring application, not even a consumer one. That is a BIG value-added difference.

Also, workarounds are seldom as efficient as actual features. For instance, sure, there are ways to do regions in the current SpeedEDIT, but not like just dropping your cursor and dragging a range and hitting play.

SpeedEDIT could be great, but it would need a lot more development than it appears to have been getting, and the longer it takes, the further behind it falls.

FWIW, I'd love to be told of any undocumented features. To me, these are not merely 'undocumented', they are omissions. There are a few I'm aware of, but the more the merrier.

The only thing I've seen with SE, I can't stop using it. When was our wish for Tedit to be standalone discussed on VTNT, 2001?

For those who tried my RPN, -.5+ = -.5 to -.1 in a luma setting. Had a 4444 render bugg, that would not overlay. The bugg was HDV720 so as to use the bugg as a wipe. What? LOL Yep, the bugg was keyframed back to full screen at the cut, then back to a bugg. So when I had found this Luma setting of 4444, I went back and rendered 4224 and just left the 4444 luma layer.
