    Scratchbuilding/Kitbashing Sci-Fi Models: Part 4

This is part 4 of my scratchbuilding/kitbashing tutorial, specifically for sci-fi models and props. The techniques apply to CG modeling as well as "real-world" modeling.

This installment covers surface detail for spaceships, and how to balance out subassembly detail. It covers composition techniques, discusses balance (visual and physical), etc.

In 3D, to save polygons, we often do surface detail with bitmap images. This tutorial, however, is geared more towards doing real detail with simple shapes (mostly rectangular pieces and cylinders). It's not for low-poly modeling, but hopefully if you find yourself stuck for surface detail ideas, this might help.

That is an amazing site you have there. Very inspirational.
I'm looking at an Aquafina water bottle right now and imagining what could be modeled from it.

Very cool - thanks for sharing.

Aw, thanks! Glad you got something out of it-it's a blast to cruise hardware stores and the cleaning aisle in a grocery story looking for "things" to use for parts of spaceships.
    Take care.

And forgot to mention-of course, the illustrations are made in Lightwave!

I love this kind of stuff. Very creative.

I think it would be cool if you put all the parts together into a PDF.
Let us know when Part-5 is ready.
