    Falloff and Transparent edges

I'm trying to create an engine glow effect on a ship I'm modeling. I've got a cone for the basic shape of the glow and I can't seem to make it fade out as it gets farther away from the ship. I've also fiddled around with transparent edges but it doesn't seem to work. I'm running the demo version so I don't have a manual to tell me.

make a null, parent it to the ship. Use a gradient texture set to distance from, choose the null, and set the colors. Viper is great for setting this up.

You can use marvins suggestion as well as
the value procedural with falloff or weight maps with a gradient. theres also the old method of just using a painted gradient.
