This is a mesh I've been working on recently -- 300,265 polygons (4,065,794 polygons when subpatched)--Just a few more texture tweaks and I should be done.....

I'm still trying to figure out how to achieve the semi-petrified skin that kind of looks like peeling rubber cement...
I'm not really sure how to go about capturing that texture though. You can see what I'm talking about in this ref pic (on the telescope housing and his head and arms):
From what I've read and been told this actually was rubber cement that was allowed to dry and then was partially peeled away. This would either require a detailed image and alpha map set, or some fancy procedural textures.
Anyone know of an easier way to achieve this? Any and all suggestions will be readily tried.
