Thread: Modeler help?

    Modeler help?

I'm looking for a good source of lessons or tutorials to help me with modelling. I come from a background where I used Animation:Master and 3D Studio Max, both of which feature splines for modelling. I've tried box modelling but it doesn't seem as intuitive to me. I'm used to being able to lay a line down that helps define an object's shape. I'm especially interested in being able to do this for organic models and objects. I see how Splines can be created in Modeler, but I'm not sure what to do with them.

Are there any good tutorial series anyone can recommend? I might prefer video tutorials over online ones just to get away from my computer for a little while.

Alternatively, does anyone know of any plug-ins that might be useful? If there's a useful plug-in that offers support, I'd be willing to take a look at it.

    Thanks!

There are several great books on Lightwave, "Lightwave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation" is just one of them.

Thank you for your replies. Have either of you used the items you mentioned? Were they really helpful?

See, I've got Don Ablan's Lightwave books already but I'm looking for something else. I've found it really easy to create meshes which are too dense. Using splines in Animation:Master helps me to keep the shape I want, without having a dense mesh. I was hoping to find something that'd help me duplicate that within Lightwave...

I went to his site and the free tutorials look very much like what I'd be interested in. Do you know if the tutorials are a good buy? Anyone else have any comments pro or con?

For spline modeling go to kurvstudios.com and purchase the SSR Chevy spline modeling 2 disk set. It's about 15 hours of modeling and you'll be very comfortable modeling just about anything you want when done. BTW, I'm new to Lightwave and I found the videos surprisingly easy to follow.

I highly recommend this thread on my forum. Since this question is asked quite a bit, I created a sticky with links to other web sites that have tutorials, plug ins and a list of books for beginner's. The address is http://www.silkrooster.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19
You will also find some of Splinegod's tutorials on Kurv Studio as well as free tutorials, just register for free to view them.
Dan Ablan has free tutorials at http://3dgarage.com Both Dan and Spline also offer commercial(pay) tutorials as well.
Most video tutorials play on computer not the tv, unless you have a way to connect your computer to the tv. So keep that in mind when buying video's.

Ive used splines for years. I think I probably started using them back when Animation Master was Amiga only. I also started using them in Lightwave when those were the only real organic modeling tools. Theres literally hundreds of ways to use splines in LW to model. In terms of just generally learning LW I have a full course including unlimited online support here:
    http://www.3dtrainingonline.com/introtolightwave.htm
I also have DVDs at KURV. One is called getting started with splines which covers just about everything splines can be used for in Lightwave up to and including spline patching. The DVD was just recently released.

Another is my product creation DVD which covers modeling with splines and subDs as well as UV mapping, lighting and rendering.

I would also check out the KURV support forums and see what people are doing with the DVDs.
