    Rope

I’ve been working on a plugin to do such things as generate rope. Finally reached a point where I have something worth presenting .

The plugin works by creating rope along curves that approximately follow a series of connected 2-point polygons. Thus, I just have to edit the guide polygons and then generate the rope in one fell-swoop. I also created a mesh tool that allows for interactive editing of the rope.

It's hard to think of anything with more rope than an old sailing ship. Thus, with this example from a nautical theme, I can officially make the leap from forum lurker to contributor. These pics show a three different styles of rope.

An one more. Hey, how do you post more than one pic at a time?

    That's pretty cool.. nice contribution!

To post more than one image at a time you have to have a web site with the pictures in the content somewhere; they just have to be accessable. Then you have to use the IMG tags to import the images into the body of your posts.

If you don't have online content to pull from posting one image at a time is what you are stuck with.. sorry.

Is this a plug in that is ready for use by other than beta testers?

Excelent work, you going to share that plugin? Does it generate a bunch of polys or can you adjust it? Can we see the wires?

Thanks everybody for your kind remarks. I'll try to respond to comments/questions shortly. In the meantime, here's an entirely different look.

Here are screen shots of the Rope Editor tool in use. Views are 1) the original guide polys, 2) rope editor activated, 3) after modifying one of the guide points, 4) close up of wires.

The polys are adjustable. The ropes for the original pics use 3 polys for the cross section of each strand. The large rope has 4 strands (each textured to look like a rope) and the medium rope has 3 strands. The smallest rope is actually just a textured tube with 4 polys per section. Each twist of the rope needs 4 or more poly sections along its length.

As far as making the plugin available – I haven’t really thought that far ahead. It would need some additional polish. If there is enough interest, I could consider the options. Perhaps, I could work with someone who could try it out in their environment and go from there. Let me know if you have a definite interest.

I am ready to participate in testing(or whatewer is needed).

Hey, I think Many (included myself) LW'ers would be intersted in this plugin.... doing so with the LW tools (only) is time consuming, and once it extrude, no way of adjusting it... so YES, definitly intersted..!

looking at the pics you've just posted, It seam like you know what you're talikng about...

Add me to the list who would love to try it. This is exactly what I need for the ship I'm modeling.
