Lightwave 8.xand beyond Feature Poll PART 2 (sencond choice)

I know the complaint last time was that you only got to choose one of the features. So here is part two so now you can make your top 2 picks. Your first on the first poll and your second on this one....

quite frankly all most are going to do is not be honest and check the same option twice.

The newtek admin can look at who has voted for what and remove any double votes if they wanted

Double voting shouldn't skew voting too much .. as long as not many people do it. The results count just be looked at as non-linear results and you could get a good estimation for what features are wanted. I mean just look at ngons for SDS. 19 people have voted for it in the first poll, and 8 have voted for it in the second poll. Even if everyone that voted for it in the second poll also voted for it in the first that'd mean 11 people had voted for it as their first choice with something else as their second choice, so it'd still come in second behind 3dpaint and only by one person. So no matter what it's clear that ngons for SDS is the most wanted feature for people that have voted so far.

Yay voted for non linear morphs this time

Now gimme other threads so i'll vote for the other options!!! hehehe

talking more seriously these features are all very valid. i hope to see quite all of them as Lw progresses, during its cycle

I don't see that double voting will skew voting that much either. It's not a matter of honesty. If you really want an option that badly, by all means, vote for it twice. If most people voted that way as you suggest, then it's really just a redundancy poll. This just gives you an opportunity to get your vote in on something else other then a single features.

    my request

what i would love to see is newtek woooooo cebas.com to make a version of thier FinalToon product for Lightwave. Or, have newtek copy the ideas into the next big patch/or plugin for lightwave. Come on I'll pay for it...

Hmm..Voted for ngons first....and parametric modeling second..
But..I think these polls are missing 3 major things..My personal op..

Fluids...talking about what will be standards in apps..i am most sure
this is it..just a matter of time and wich application that will incorporate it fastest....its like volumetrics,voxels,subdivs..

    Intergrated...well...what can I say...Either you hate it...or you hate
the fact that it isnīt intergrated...Iīm for the Intergrated

World class Render....Do belive that 3d apps most have the
ability to work with other applications..and pipelines, therefore
rendering out with third party like mental ray,renderman,brazil..is
    not an option..itīs a must.
And of course subpixel displacement!...come on now NT..the
    Train is Leaving...

prometheus: the trains already left, poser has subpixel displacement.

NT dont let Bryce get it before Lightwave.

yea emoboy83..poser is catching up..still no particle system
    or hypervoxels...and the dynamics...ehh..

seriously..the new team at newtek..sure has a lots of job to
do to satisfy all requests..obviesly ..not all requests can be satisfied
...but my feeling is somehow that Lightwave is falling behind many other apps..

Those people..who are working a lot with character animation..seems
to have got..some requests answered..but otherwise it looks
like blindfolds were on when looking to whats new in 3d technology..
    meaning..fluidsystem,subpixel displace,render types..improved particle systems..
So my feelings about the new Lightwave is..ok..its better than
previous versions..but still a little disappoitment...
No big changes in modeling..except for tools..that actually were
    plugins before...
    skytracer..? nada
    Hypervoxels..?nada..
    particle systems..well..had expected more..

    Thats my opinions amongst others..

    Question

Can somebody please explain me what subpixel displacement is? I don't understand how displacement (which is done in 3D space) is related to pixels (which live in 2D space)

Any images where you can see the effect at work?

It's basically instead of displacing the vertices of your object you displace the actual surface. So if you have a normal box with 6 polygons, using vertex displacement (currently in lightwave) with fractal noise would leave you with what'd look like a deformed box. With subpixel displacement however, you could use the same box and the same fractal noise and it'd look at if the box had been subdivided into millions of polygons and displaced, making it look lumpy.

I'd think that 3D painting as a tool within Lightwave would be a large waste of the dev team's focus at this point. There are plenty of tools for this elsewhere that have LWO support. Purchase those...

Newtek really needs to focus, right now, on the 'catch-up' with it's competitors, not clumping extra crap into the box.

Instancing - hell yes, and it'd be about time. And make sure it works 100%, even with volumetric and post effects.

Parametric (otherwise known as Procedural) Modelling - Abso - bloody - lutely. I use this in Houdini, and what a different thing it is! It would create an entirely new paradigm for LW modelling, making things like animated booleans a possibility. Procedural instancing? Oh yeah...

Dynamics calculations need quicker resolutions (as in solutions) without sacrificing quality.

A new shader (node) tree surfacing tool would be awesome.

I dunno... we need new toys, not purchased and incorporated 3rd party software. Hoping 8.x and beyond is something to be proud of yet again...

    3d paint AND subpixel displacement..
Think Zbrush integrated into LW. Now THAT would be cool!

Oh MAN... wouldn't it just...! I'd love to see a proper 3D paint system implemented. And subpixel disp would be incredibly useful.
