Laptop Users: question out about memory upgrades

    Hi,

I decided to get a laptop and am looking at the Dell Inpiron 9100 or 5150 and wanted to know if any users of these systems got them fully loaded with memory or purchased memory later. I thought I had heard that memory is cheaper if purchased outside dell.

    Any advice would be welcome

Upgrading memory in a laptop can be quite the pain. Go to Crucial.com and look up that model to see how much they sell memory upgrades for.

Laptops don't use the same memory that you have in your PC.

Yeah, I knew about the desktop and laptop mem difference.

I just checked Kingston.com and 512MB for my Laptop model is $183 while the same upgrade at dell is $300. I guess I'll take the least amount of mem and just upgrade it myself.

Now the REAL trick is making sure how many slots are in the laptop and how many are AVAILABLE. IF it has three slots, Dell might fill two of them with 128mb DIMMs, which would suck royaly. Might want to ask Dell about it. Also, if you upgrade it yourslef, not sure if that would void the warranty.

they give free memory so 2 slots with two 256MB chips.

So getting a new chip would give me 768MB or 1256MB depending on which one I get.

I'll keep the extra chip incase I evver have to send it back.
