    Expand selection with pattern

Hi, is it possible in lightwave to select for example every 3rd polygon with expanding the selection, i select a polygon, then select the 3rd polygon, then expand the selection with a hotkey.

    i know there is a function -> https://docs.lightwave3d.com/lw2020/...ct-nth-pattern
    but this doesnt work.

maybe there is a script or free plugin, but this should be a standard feature of selecting.

    thx alex

Select n-th Pattern works fine for me.
I think that you don't understand how it works.
It is "Select n-th Pattern in order in which elements were created".

During modeling artist is making and deleting elements all the time.
Mesh editing tool is often implemented as "delete element that we're changing, recreate it from scratch" (so order of elements on the list is "damaged")

Why is it so regular on newly made Sphere?
Because it reveals order in which Sphere tool created polygons:

I made a few quad polygons, in order mentioned, and used Select n-th Pattern with 3:

Then I selected some of them randomly, cut'n'pasted, run Select n-th Pattern also with 3 and completely different polygons were selected:

It works, but not the way you think it should..

If you want to know order of elements they have on the list, select the all, and press "i" shortcut.

    Hi Sensei,

you are right, i did not understand it , but now ... thx for your explanation.

So there is no native way to do this kind of selection, like all other 3d apps do .

Ugh, not usually, unless their creation order happens to match the nth sequence ordering you wish to apply.

As implemented, "select nth" isn't very useful. So users must inspect actual order first, yet the tool doesn't display ordering...
