Sure, for the ever-decreasing set of users whose feature "consumption" doesn't encounter serious stability problems.

Put another way: How much work are you willing to lose due to crashes in product A, before finding and switching to product B becomes a top priority? How many projects are you willing to hit a "dead end" with using product A, forcing you to switch and redo a bunch of effort in product B, before you just stop trying to work in product A altogether?

"Capability" is only useful when resting on a solid foundation of stability/reliability.

Truly, better has never been a point.
If you had ever seen SpeedEdit, you would truly understand how much better so much of the NewTek tech has been better before its time.
Sadly, gone before the day would embrace them and NT would bank the r&d to make it so much better. The apple editors/gfx programs come closest in real-time results nowadays.
I dread editing today with the waiting and rendering. Fired up FCP and gonna do motion cuz all education is video, nowadays. Virtually, speaking.

There's very little folks can do now if they're outside the set whose functionality is stable, other than hope for fixes (and explore alternatives).

Just because they reorganized their internal teams doesn't release VizRT from their obligation to fix significant defects in a product they sold to customers (iow, LW2020). Whether that happens is about the best "canary" currently available w.r.t. LW's future prospects.

There's nothing wrong with remaining hopeful, just temper it with awareness of LW's history.

If LW2020 does what you need in a stable manner, you're set. If not, hope for a quick fix. If you're hoping for significant new features or improvements, you probably need to constrain that hope a bit given LW history and circumstances.

What kind of renders do you typically do? Do they involve "optically-complex" materials/surfaces and/or SSS? Typically stills or animation?

If you've got plans for animation in your future, you might want to consider a used license that includes LW2019. With LW2019, you can upgrade to LW2020 if needed, but still have LW2019 as fallback for areas like anim & anim render where LW2020 currently has issues. If fixes for LW2020 anim & anim render issues appear, that's great, but at least if not, you're not "stuck". Buying a used LW2020 license that's just LW2020 is likely to be a bit... frustrating, given your intended longer-term goals.

Not offering to sell mine, to be clear.

Ryan Roye also just mentioned another animation issue (apparently from beta but in release)...

I seem to recall at least a couple others came up, but don't have time to search further for them right now, sorry.

Tried that. Support said for me to buy a used copy. I guess I'm out of luck. As I was chatting with Thomas Cheng, I don't like my options: rental software, Houdini or Blender. I'm seriously considering just leaving 3d altogether.
why would they not sell lightwave 2015 on their store with an option to upgrade or cross-grade? makes no sense to me.
    what is their business plan?

If they sell it they have to support it. And they only support one version at a time. (If that)

For one thing, LW2015 doesn’t work properly on latest versions of MacOS, the issue was fixed in LW2018.

This is just hear say, gloom and doom.

Personally I have all versions back to 6, so can go back to 2018, 2019 if needed.

Agreed, but we might be totally wrong....

And it may very well be needed, which is the concern...
