Accutrans will keep all surfaces. There's also an option to collapse layers by material.

If in doubt, download Accutrans (the trial version is the full version) and test it for yourself if it will work.

In this case you are almost better off collapsing everything into one layer and using bones and weights to animate parts. Infinitely better workflow in lightwave.

There are three ways to merge layers in AccuTrans.
    - merge all layers
    - merge selected layers
    - merge layers with same materials.

AccuTrans does not support reading and writing of nodes to LWO3 files.

I am currently studying nodes and the LWO3 file format specification provides very little information.

It's too early to determine how much support there will be for nodes.

@Rayek: Sadly Accutrans didn't save the node setup of the surfaces, as MicroMouse confirmed in the post above this. I still will buy it because it will be useful for other projects.

@erikals: I didn't find the scripts. It seems wayback just archived the links, but not the scripts themselves. It looks like a lot of useful scripts, though, almost like OD-Tools.

@hypersuperduper: Actually I never thought of that. I was still on the old "layers with pivot points" route. Your suggestion just works like a charme. Since I never really got friends with bones I need to dive into that now. Will Genoma be any better in my case? (LW 2018). Seriously, thanks a lot for this seemingly obvious hint.

So I am still stuck with scrolling a lot in the layers panel, but I learned something today. Thanks all.

They are black-box that you read using LWSDK NodeEditorFuncs.load() and write using NodeEditorFuncs.save() functions.
It is not possible to read 100% successfully nodes, from 3rd party app, because they are written by 3rd party plugin developers the way they want them to be.
You would have to reverse engineer the all 3rd party nodes created by 3rd party developers.

Sensei, I have no plans to support nodes from 3rd parties.

The support I add for nodes will be quite marginal.

Yep, was just discussing this on another thread. The "LWO3 Specification" is missing a bunch of critical information.

OK, someone (names were changed to protect the innocent) sent me the script from Chris Peterson (remove empty layers). It was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much.
I just saw that in some other thread Chris Peterson awoke to live again. Good to see.

Just FYI you don’t have to protect anyone lol. All of my scripts are free and open source. Use them how you like ... modify them add to them use them or learn from them. They are my gift to the community for all the years of help I received from everyone here. Feel free to even post it in the thread so if someone runs across the same problem in the future they have access to the script without having to look for it.

OK, thank you very much. It's a very nice collection.
The protection thing wasn't meant too serious...
