    Environment troubles

Black. I get black. I choose Backdrop with and without Gradient, Image Environment, Textured Environment, Physical Sky...

No volumetrics chosen. Is that my problem?

    I miss the old renderer.

Never mind. I just made a new scene with a backdrop that works and pulled all my objects in. And then I deleted that bad file so that it never infects my scenes again.

You need to add an environment light to your scene if you don't already have one and have "visible to camera" checked on in the environment light's property panel for backdrops to render in 2020.

Oh, thank you. I thought it might have something to do with that light, but I missed the visible to camera check box.
