Content of LW2020 trial - Not enough for new users

Running the trial of Lightwave 2020 now, as a new user with no licenses or access to older Lightwave versions/downloads. The Contents download is suprisingly slim for commercial application sold for 995$. There are a few complete demo scenes and a few educational scenes, but the 500MB Contents download seems to be missing previous content from LW 2018 and 2019, that I was hoping would be included. Is it a trial limitation?

Only found an old FTP site with some LW9 content, also looks incomplete: ftp://ftp.newtek.com/products/LightWave/Trial/Content/

The online manuals for 2018, 2019 and 2020 mostly point to the content folders of 2018 and 2019. No luck there, except a few online files.

Looking at the more expensive Cinema 4D, they use the included content as a selling point.

Should I try to report this as a problem?

Absolutely, only providing such a limited amt of content isn't going to help convince a new customer to buy LW. When it comes to example content, especially for new users, there needs to be a LOT more coverage than just "what's new in 2020" (which, as you note, is meaningless to a new customer).

The fact that the documentation refers to 2018 / 2019 content that isn't included with 2020 is a separate issue, IMO. The docs pointing at prior versions' content basically guarantees future problems -- if the docs need content to illustrate functionality, then that content should be in the OOB content, or even better, there needs to be a backing online repository of available content for the docs (available to ALL customers).

Please enlighten us. The descriptor under your avatar states you are a registered user with a join date of 17 years ago. Yet you are a new user with no previous LW licenses???

    I’m intrigued!

    Fair question.

That said, there are plenty of legit LW licensees who aren't in the "new registration system" because they never upgraded past 9.x. Quite a few LW customers "stopped" at 9.x, because they weren't interested in the HC/Core membership/pre-order stuff, etc.

Regardless, the lack of LW2020 content is worth reporting, as is the issue with existing docs referencing older, unavailable content.

    Well that escalated quickly...

New to Lightwave and just have the 2020 trial.
Long time fan that could not afford LW back in the day, expensive hobby.
Not sure when I registered to the forum, if it was 2003 or if it is a forum bug.

Anyways, going to look for some problem report email address now.

/Edit, found a complete LW8 package recently on ebay, but the 100$ license transfer cost was too much for the retro computing hobby.

Thanks, reported the problem now. Maybe it will be fixed in the next update.

In the mean time, the old FTP site has some old LW9 content, which happened to have a very modern demo scene called "Virus".
It looks similar to the virus shown all the time, everywhere the last few months, just needs some new colors and higher resolution to update the 2006 scene to 2020.

I tried LW9 content with LW2020 and I had to resurrect my old LW9.x in order to see how the displacement Dino demo should look like.

There is no displacement visible with LW2020 until you modify the shader settings.
I guess it is a lot of work to update all materials from the old content folders and it was way faster to just get rid of those old scenes and objects and push LW2020 out to the customers.

They should have included all the previous content or at least most of the content that was shipped with 2018 & 2019. My guess is the reason they didn't is because someone would have to go through all the content and make sure it was all set up to render properly in 2020 with an environment light etc. Maybe someone can enlighten us regarding this. At the very least it could be made available to 2020 users as a separate download with a disclaimer that scenes were intended for rendering in 2018 & 2019 and may not render properly by default in 2020.

Got a positive response from the customer support, that the problem report will be forwarded to the doc team, to make the older content available.

Ya all they need to do is put up a separate download link for 2020 users.

Not updated today with the huge 2020.0.1 update, should have reported the issue sooner... Trial period is reset though, 30 new free days of 2020 for everyone.

I'm on it. Converting or remaking scenes from scratch in some cases. The first scene in the https://docs.lightwave3d.com/lw2020/appendices/examples directory has been updated. You can click on the box at the top of the page to download a zip. Let me know if there's a specific scene you'd like to see and I give it priority. Otherwise I'm just working my way down the list.
