I don't think they mean to punish anyone, if I'm honest I doubt there's even any clever pricing structure from business bods, trying to eek out every extra penny, like Autodesk does it.
I just think they can't please everyone unfortunately, and whatever pricing structure (apart from free) it's going to piss someone off.

Oh indeed, i don't think its malicious in any way. They want regular customers like anyone else, they are after all a business and have to pay wages. Its only fair that if you skip one or two updates you pay more. Looking at the pricing if you skip one update, you are still better off when you get the next update even if it costs $100 more.

Yeah anything other than free is going to aggravate someone. Sometimes people forget that many of us don't actually pay for the updates, the client ultimately does. I think many Blender users seem to forget this, just because its free does not mean everyone is suddenly going to jump to using it. People have time and money invested in a software and will be reluctant to change unless there is significant reason to do so, cost is not always a significant reason if you are a big studio or a user that makes money from what you do.

    Yh that's a bug.
You need to turn off threaded mesh evaluations in preferences to improve rig performance.

People who feel that their 'loyalty' should be rewarded by discounts, should also consider that since their last upgrade they've had the use of the enhancements, while those that didn't take advantage of updating the software did not. Companies shouldn't punish people who don't upgrade every cycle. The upgrade pricing is definitely a punishment and a barrier to people re-entering the LW fold.

Strange is that trial build is from 2 march (2020.0 (build 3214) (Win64) 02-Mar-2020) an relase date is April-23-2020. It must be well tested ;]

I think this is about right. Obviously, it's possible to look at promotional pricing in two different ways: It's either an incentive to purchase early (or regularly) or it's to punish those who don't. I suppose both are logically correct, depending on perspective and emphasis. An offer's details and countless variable (many of which can be individual, environmental, or subjective) may incline someone one way or the other.

The way I see it, is the user is punishing themselves, if they choose not to upgrade

It's not just new features (although there maybe less this time round) it's the bug-fixes to all the other stuff that is equally, if not more-so, important. (To me anyway).

Thank you lardbros, yeah figured it out (post #118), works as expected. Also, ACES Filmic with Exposure 1.5 looks pretty good to me for Tone Mapping.

    Good luck with that.
Thanks! I will continue to be successful doing what I love using the software I prefer.

There is still something wrong. On my machine dinosaur walk in 2019 is more than twice as fast as in 2020.

    Yes, maybe, so it's a double-punishment!

Perhaps people who don't update each year should have an extra discount at launch to compensate! LOL

As someone who doesn't use LW professionally, there's a significant barrier to re-entry now. I can't help but feeling the policy is reminicent of 1990 not 2020. LW isn't a contender in the industry right now it's a lingerer and it's penalising it's old customer base for not sticking with it every year.

Companies should adopt a pricing strategy to maximise revenue, not punish lapsed users.

Anyway, I sound like an old record.

there was a better explanation on a site but I cant find it right now. This is the kind of thing that I expect Gerardo/Denis would be all over.
