Personally I always thought those looked a bit fake.

The industry doesn't use real dinosaurs anymore cuz the insurance costs were too high. Line producers just do everything digital now.

Agree, they're alright, but not optimal.

my guess is that it was due to some current limitations,
    - the older LightWave render engine
    - the artists
    - time given on the project

I think there has generally been an attempt to change the aesthetic perception of dinosaurs over the years, in accordance with latest thinking. Currently the vogue seems to be bird-like in favour of reptiles, so the dinosaur heads now seem a bit "beaky", though the've just unearthed a specimen 42 feet long weighing 19,000 lbs (!).

Personally I prefer the stylised interpretations from the old tea cards or sweet wrappers. FWIW, I believe the book Modeling Digital Dinosaurs, featuring "realistic" dinosaurs, is software agnostic but actually done in Lightwave (note a review by experienced modeller Glen Southern).

This was Lightwave, Maya (animation), with some Terragen scene. Gas fluids was using TFD (some hypervoxels). AE and Nuke for comp. Show also won VES award for best Visual Effects for TV that year.
