Does this have any implications in terms of a desirability for CPU rendering over GPU like Octane. Not sure how the costs compare, but say 5 or 10 of either of these in a little renderfarm could speed up things significantly ?

About time Intel tries to catch up with gpu. Their monopoly has made desktop cpu stagnant.

If you find a picture of Intel showing it, the CHILLER (Cooler) is BIGGER

than everything else size-wise & is separate by the side & looks like a

'90's air con unit (lol) Early days bad Promo is this photo.

I wouldn't have unveiled that, more of a lash up?

Idle curiosity. Any system built around either of these CPUs is way beyond "weekend hobbyist", and will cost mucho dinero. I was under the impression that an Octane-based GPU rendering system with (a) fairly high-end video card(s) could blow a CPU-based rendering system out of the water without breathing hard.

Obviously, beyond bragging rights, throughput is the goal, but if you need that much throughput, why not use a commercial rendering farm?

Depending on how you setup Octane you certainly can blow ANY CPU out of the water with one to two High End GPU's. The cost of those gpu's are equal or much less than any top end CPU. However if you want full radiosity renders I'm thinking until noise reduction comes along (time will tell with Octane 4) it may still be good for CPU rendering.

I can say definitivly that exterior (direct lighting) will probably never catch up on CPU side. I can render 1080P exterior scenes with 10's of 100's of millions of poly's (think large city with trees plants etc.) in mins a frame. Octane is brilliant for DL setups. I use ambient occlusion for interiors, can't get good fast full radiosity renders even with two 1080 ti's still.... I never have frames of full HD take longer than 3-5 mins ever. Typically 1-2 mins.

These announcements cement me in the CPU rendering camp. I really like the sound of a 64 thread ThreadRipper. It's getting close to that time again when I need to think about my next workstation and this will likely be the right time to do it for me. Maybe I will finally move my production work to LW 2018 with these extra CPU threads as well.
