Cool TC1 and VMC1 beta builds

    Fellow TC1 and VMC1 users,

First, I want to acknowledge that recent TC1 and VMC1 builds had several quite serious issues affecting both video and audio output. This is entirely our fault and, although we’ve worked around the clock to resolve the problems (as those users who reported bugs will know), we believe in being as open as possible, so I want to explain what happened and why we took extra time to get it right.

As you probably know, we develop our own I/O hardware. This matters a lot, because we can do things to improve performance and quality that exceed what off-the-shelf hardware allows. Our latest generation products use very sophisticated methods to queue as many GPU commands for processing as is physically possible, and allow these to continue operating independent of the rest of the system.

In most cases, this allows the system to survive almost all performance hits that might occur, for any number of reasons. It also means that the GPU continues to process commands regardless of activity elsewhere on the system. These frames are then transferred (via DMA) to our output card, which is designed to queue a number of required frames as ‘in flight’ before they are needed for output (note that the way we do this does not accrue added latency). Again, this means that our system can output data from the GPU reliably under virtually any circumstance, while simultaneously using the CPU for other things – for example, processing a large number of 4K streams, which is far beyond what any other system I know of can do).

Our hardware has 3 "slots" available for DMAs to be placed "in flight", which is the perfect number required for the frame-synchronizer to avoid additional latency and, likewise, for GPU in flight processing to run at the minimum possible latency. All of this is to explain that the root cause of recent problems was that, in some cases, the software could queue up 4 slots worth of work, rather than 3. When this happened, the outputs would basically go berserk, producing flashing video, or audio glitches.

This problem was incredibly complex, and it took painstaking effort to fix reliably for all timing cases and situations. We have built test cases from now on to entirely test for this particular issue automatically.

We sincerely believe that we have resolved this problem completely, and have spent weeks testing it (the QA team is complaining of torture by sine wave tone!), but we earnestly wanted to provide all of you with the opportunity to try the beta build, to fully confirm that any problems you’ve encountered are truly resolved. The beta downloads are located at the links below:

    TC1 BETA (Build 180223)

    VMC1 BETA (Build 180223)
    http://new.tk/VMC1180223B-01

IMPORTANT: If you see any problems, please put them as bug reports to:

Set the Fogbugz project menu to “TriCaster XD”. Please try to provide as many details as possible on any issues and, hopefully, steps to reproduce them; or send us a link to a short cell phone video showing the issue so that we can see what you are seeing.

On a positive note, these builds also take some work that we were doing for a future version of the products that includes an entirely new audio engine with vastly improved audio quality and brings it into the current beta builds. This takes us from pretty good audio filtering with O(3) filters right the way up to the “crazy level” of O(20).

Once again, please accept my personal apologies for the problems in the last build. And be assured that we are utterly committed to getting any further problems you encounter resolved as fast as is humanly possible.

    Andrew

Andrew, there is no mention of 8000 or 460 users within your post. Is it safe to say this is the same issue? What is your current timeline for fixing these issues?

Sorry, I should have covered those. We will post a beta here as well if it would be helpful.

Download links for the latest Beta build of TriCaster Advanced Edition (5-1) are below.

TriCaster Advanced Edition BETA (build 5-1-180226):
    http://new.tk/TC51180226B-01
    http://new.tk/TC51180226B-02

Again if you see any problems, please submit them as bug reports to:

    https://fogbugz.newtek.com/default.asp?pg=pgPublicEdit

Set the project menu to “TriCaster XD” and please provide as many details as possible on any issues along with steps to reproduce them. Sometimes the easiest way to do this is to link us to a short cell phone video showing the issue so that we can see what you are seeing and what was being done when the issue occurs.

That is correct. The new build that was just publicly released includes the fixes/updates for the video and audio issues referred to in Andrew's original post.
