    Issue with 1080i vs 1080p

We use a TriCaster 860 system and a couple of JVC GY-HM750U cameras in our studio. The cameras are routed into a Blackmagicdesign Compact VideoHub via SDI and from there on into the SDI Inputs of the TriCaster.

Since the cameras can either be run in 1080/50i mode or 1080/25p mode we wanted to try out a progressive video workflow. After switching the camera to 1080/25p we created a 25p session in TriCaster and routed the SDI signals into it. For some reason in the Input Settings > Configure > Connection the setting "1080/25p (SDI)" does NOT deliver any video input at all (remains black), only when we switch to the settings called "1080i (SDI)" and "1080/25 PsF" (SDI) we get the picture. To our understanding these two settings are interlaced though.

Also – in order to make sure it is not an issue with the VideoHub in between – we routed the camera switched to 1080/25p DIRECTLY into the TriCaster input but get the same behaviour as above.

Any ideas or experiences in this respect? Thank you ever so much for your help!

I have this same issue. I can't have my cameras set to 1080p. Nothing gets them into the system. I use to be able to get 1080p, but after a software and core update it stopped working. I'm working with CS on the issue, but that's all stalled until a proper, stable update is released. CS told me to update and see if that fixed the issue, so I'm waiting for the release.

As a side note, when we were able to bring in a 1080p signal when we would zoom into a virtual set using comps, the signal in output one would dropout for between 20 seconds and a minute causing problems in the studio.

Most older HD camcorders that record 1080p30 or 1080p25 won't actually output a 1080p Progressive video signal - rather, the output always gets converted to 1080i for compatibility with displays. That's been my experience. Sony cameras would even state that in the manual. I did just read over the JVC manual and can't find a clear reference to what is actually being output from the HM750, but I'd bet it is always 1080i.

There's a lot of confusion in this area. It's my impression that many if not all cameras output PsF, not 'real' progressive, and that it's not unusual for monitors to mis-report this.

Thanks for your feedback. Not what I would have expected, but very interesting indeed. Guess we might give it a try recording (hopefully in 1080p) directly to the SD card then, but of course it's a dead end in the TriCaster workflow in this respect. Still a good machine.
