Hi Oliver! I think you already answered my question here, but to close the circle:

Basically, I'm looking for an object-oriented overlay for LightWave's antiquated node system. It drives me crazy that I cannot define a node "class" that encapsulates a set of attributes and behaviors that I can reuse throughout my model. If I change the base node, the change should be automatically propagated to all materials linked to that node (or nodes that enclose that node).

Basically, I'm looking for what the "Compound" node should have been from day one. LightWave's implementation violates the DRY principle, and makes it agonizing when a change in a core node must be carefully copy-pasted across dozens of descendant nodes manually. It's infuriating.

didnt xsi work that way? the correct way, the logical way?

maybe truart’s global materials would help?

From what I understand XSI did indeed work that way (there is an entire thread on that subject elsewhere in the forum).

Anyhow, it was super-nice of Oliver to point me towards one of his competitors; I don't want to hijack his OD Tools thread talking about DBW and TrueArt. Thanks again Oliver!

ahh. ok.. i get it now... internally, i actually wrote a whole library i wrote that encapsulates all native/octane/3rd party nodes that i know about. so with that, i can easily say "create an image node with these parameters, create a material node, connect them in x fashion, and so on.... however, its not really something i plan on releasing. it was SO much work and I will call anyone attempting to recreate that completely crazy... but.. i really needed it for some specific stuff, and in the end, i guess I am glad i did it... it was extremely painful...

Regarding DBW, we arent competitors.. we support and complement each other. Michael and I worked hard to make sure our plugins work with each other. Nodemeister works perfectly with my OD Uberpass for example... it didnt at the start, but we quickly worked on making sure it did..

I was just about to chime in. Well, looks like I did. Yeah, we don't see each other at competitors and we certainly help each other out. The LW developer community is so small, we have to.

Seriously though, we cover different areas and also have different philosophies when it comes to developing tools but we both want to advance LW. And we also recommend each other to our customers if we see a need.

Having said that, thanks for the plug Oliver.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Made a quick video showing how revolutionizing Uberpass really is for lightwave. A simple case study: https://vimeo.com/353067090

Hi Oliver, in latest OD tools, update scene has no update button as shown in the vimeo video. LW 2019.1.2

Opening the scene reference master plugin will check and see that the scenes have changed, giving a pop-up warning but there is no way to reload them and the pop-up keeps appearing when you try and do anything and you cannot close the Scene references Panel.
Clicking on the Reload Ref. Scene button doesn't seem to work. In this case, I have changed a model to an instance and expect to see an update. Is that button missing by mistake? Or is this a bug?

A question regarding scene refs :

can a scene have a motion mixer motions and the motion be adjusted in the motion mixer in the master scene?
I am looking to reference the same scene with an animated hierarchy about 200 times and want to offset the motion of the reference animation.
if not, perhaps you (or someone else) knows a way to do this in lightwave ?

    OT tools 2019 Requests :

    1.

ability to clone a heirarchy with position and target constraints and have the resulting hierarchy work properly.

If you try and clone a hierarchy with LW version or any other version I can find, it will break, as the clones reference the original targets as defined in the motion options.
Additionally, it would be nice to be able to specify number of clones and an offset to the resulting cloned hierarchy.
This is a real weak point in lightwave since as far back as I can see, judging by my searches in the forums. Thanks.

    2. Reference scene to import models as instances. If the same scene is imported multiple times (would be nice to have this option as a one button press) then all scenes with instances will reference the same objects so no duplicate masters.

I'll look to enter this into your bug report tool but I need to find my l/p

you're better of taking that discussion to discord.. too many things to reply here on the forum.
