Can high school student buy eductional lightwave ?

    Dear Friends:

I have a friend whose daughter wants to learn animation.
She is still in high school. Does she qualify to buy the educational version of lightwave ?
And also, would it be possible for her to get lightwave version 9.6 ?
This is because I am still using lw 9.6 and if she has same version she can learn from me
at my home, then go to her home and practice on same lightwave version.
    Thank you !!!

Yep - she totally can. I've seen it for $195.

She would only be able to get 9.6 by finding it used.

The reality is that everything you know about 9.6 translates to 2015 really easy. Don't handcuff her because you haven't upgraded.

This is just my opinion but if you're going to have her learn Lightwave, better to use the latest version (2015). Version 9.6 is at least 6 years old and so much has changed/improved since then. Parts of the 9.6 workflow may even be considered obsolete now.

While I must say I'd never want to to go back to 9.6, workflows have not really changed that much. VPR is a workflow enhancement and Genoma rigging is a workflow enhancement. Yes there are some other minor workflow improvements, but for the most part it's the same LW from 6.0 to 2015 as far as general workflows go. Core was the "LW" that introduced totally new workflows.

Sure, the 9.6 tool set is mostly still available in 2015, and yes I'll concede the general workflow is the same. But when you get to actual usage, nowadays I do set up my scenes a bit differently than I did back in 9.6 as there are more efficient/effective tools and options in 2015 for lighting, shading, animating, etc. I can, of course, choose to use the older 9.6 tools, panels, etc., but for the most part, I wouldn't want to--that's what I meant by 'obsolete'. It's better to learn how to use the newer tools and methodologies.

I guess it depends on what areas of 3D will be taught and how far/deep the the training will go.

For me personally, it would make me nuts to go back and work in 9.6. I recently had to go back to using 11.6.2 for a task, and I even found using that 'oldie' annoying. (The new gui enhancements already have me so spoiled.)

Maybe too late but cheaper than the ED version and it is what you are looking for:

Nice thing is this can upgrade later to the current version if she is serious later.

PS: a few other 9.6 postings there as well.
