    Sanka MkB (Sky Crawlers)

I realise that I post most of any CG project I do onto Facebook - I think I spend 90% of my time on that evil site, but I think I need to start avoiding it and coming back to forums again.... Maybe a good resolution for 2015.

My students are in their second week of a 6-week Individual Project - the final project that they do at the end of their 3D diploma here. As always, when they're busy I am left with wandering around and looking over shoulders. Most of them become pretty self-sufficient, so I occasionally do my own mini project alongside them and answer the few questions that pop up. In this case, I decided to do an aircraft model - the Sanka MkB from the anime "The sky crawlers".

Originally I was going to 'force' myself to do this in Maya - given that I've been teaching this class it all through their diploma - but feeling I 'had to' just became a weight on my shoulder and just didn't help creatively. It dragged out all week - somewhat frustratingly, and in the end I decided I'd just sit with LW and do it. In 1 day, I'd restarted and finished what I'd spent a week trying to achieve. It makes a big difference when you're not trying to force something...

Its based on a Kyushu J7W, an aircraft that the Japanese were building to fight bombers near the end of WW2 - however it never really made it into production. The anime bases pretty much all of its aircraft on WW2 designs. There's a great blog page (in Japanese) online here that looks at the design influences with loads of pictures.

Anyway, decided I'd post up this weekends work (about 10 hours or so).

    And more...

Just added a few more details - props, side intakes and small details... There's still plenty to do.

    A few extras

Quicky small details - drop pod and front flaps (no-brainers). Still got some detailing behind the canopy to do, but the base model is at a point where I can start to look at detailing up.

    At that 90% mark...

Got most the key forms in place now. There's still plenty of small detailing, and obvious tweaks and refinements needed but not a bad weekend going from scratch to mostly there...

Froze down the model, drilled and cut in a few flaps and small details, and created a few simple UV maps so I could play with textures.

While they are all panel lines (I figured the best way to see how the maps worked was to draw things that would obviously distort if issues arose), throw on a simple gradient "cel-shade" effect and add in some edges and it could make for a rather nice toon-style project. My original plan was to get a more photoreal look, and do some comp. work with live footage. We'll see how I feel... (or both).

No - those panel lines are not the final textures, just a few test ones...

And with a quicky splash of colour... Nothing final, just a test...

And just one to finish the day - interior (well, just that 'visible' part from the side of the plane at least). Trying to avoid the whole '100% reflective glass so you can't see inside' approach that is the lazy way to avoid interiors... lol!

Today I also toyed with more realistic textures. Will post some updates once I'm happy with them.

    Some updates...

I've not spent a lot of time, but I figured I should update this post with what I did the last couple of days in terms of painting textures. This is just a colour map - ideally I'll split this out to spec, diffuse, etc at a later stage.

As I'm now getting busy again at work, I don't know when I'll get a chance to finish this (I've been doing it alongside my students as they also work on their own projects). But here ya go...

    Slowly, slowly...

Right now, I think I'm done with fuselage and wings. I have painted some basic tail rudders (just no renders - and the project is at work (and its the weekend)) but for now here's a couple of updates... The UV's could have been better unwrapped (I've hidden a few seams with stuff like that mottled pattern on the front/under wing...) but for what I need its good.

I was hoping to have finished this weeks ago, but is just been dragging out of the weeks in small dribs and drabs at work when I had a little spare time... But hey, I'll get it done soon as I get towards some down-time... (ie. holiday)

    Update - tail rudders

I'm close to done with the textures at this stage - still have nose flaps, nose cone and the rear engine section to work on, but things are getting busy (and I was only doing this in the odd spare couple of hours over the last few weeks). Hopefully I'll be able to get it done in the next 2 weeks or so (I have an upcoming LWUG - it'd make for a nice show-n-tell, obviously)

A couple more updates - I'm not sure what I'd done in that full aircraft image to make it look so washed out (I suspect its because I added Specularity with a very low gloss - and its color highlights were set quite high) but obviously not a final render or surface yet so not too worried. . Note that the other non-textured parts I've just used a base colour on them to match... As far as all the "white" scratches, etc are concerned - they're likely to become a spec map, and I'll darken them to more a metallic grey color when I'm done and ready to set things up. Of course, that depends on whether I end up just celshading it or not.
