Is the VSE worth the cost? How well does it work and can you edit the stock livesets with it?

You can edit some of them and that usually is restrained to changing colors, adding logos in some sets and changing background images in some sets. Where VSE really shines is it's ability to allow you to make your own sets, but that requires Photoshop, some 3d modeling/surfacing knowledge and a lot of trail and error.

If you look in your the Add-On icon on the TriCaster home screen, there is a trial version of VSE that you can play around with to see what all it will let you do. The VSE 2.x trial will let you do everything except export a set.
