    100 days of old-skool 80's 8-bit nostalgia

    Howdy!

Its sad that I tend to live on FB, Twitter and my blog to share my 3D work and completely forget that great forums community! I thought I'd start this thread here to post up my day-to-day renders of fond 8-bit memories of my child hood. For the next 100 (well, 98 now) days, I've challenged myself to create a render a day based on said-theme. I'm presenting them (on the project website (link below)) in a 'collectable card series' format - there's a gallery event at the end of the challenge, and I think it'd be cool to print out a collection of cards to display...

Its been fun digging up the past, and as I recall one thing, I'll recall another!

My project for those curious is here : http://100daysproject.co.nz/project/2014/1937 . I posted up my memory on each image post there as well. I'll post up my renders on this thread as well for those curious... Or who had the same type of 80's nerd childhood.

Day 1 : Created my (and I'm sure a few others here) first computer...

    Day 2

Day 2 - today... I have this book actually sitting next to me on the desk here. Its the one that taught me essential 'game programming' skills (in 1K of RAM)

You'll see in the shaded wires that I have some very small hairs and 'crumbs'. Once the AA was applied, DOF, etc you just can't tell they're in the render anyway. lol!

Day 3 - WIP (still to complete)

Here's another classic from my school days. I'll post up the final render once I'm done with the other assets here.

    Day 3

Well, I managed to eventually finish it - biggest danger right now is letting myself get tied up fiddling constantly as I change my mind or don't like something... Of course, I know this - I told myself 2 days in a row to avoid making that same mistake...

However, its done and I'm fairly happy with it (I could keep tweaking, changing camera, etc). I'm sure while the ZX81 wasn't quite as popular in the USA (the 'Timex 1000') then this is probably something I'm sure many of you State-siders will appreciate.

    Day 4

Now I'm back at work, this is starting to become a lot harder in terms of available time... However, I had these models built, and its a 100 day challenge... Not a competition. It still took me a couple of hours to texture the cassettes up, add the TV display, compose the shot, render (taking 20 minutes with DOF, GI, etc) and then recompose, tweak lighting, render until I was happy with it.

Obviously I don't have everything prebuilt - so there's gonna be plenty of modeling challenges on their way I'm sure!

    Day 5

Something simpler with the busy work day making things harder on finding time... The 5.25" floppy disk. Obviously a classic media format that I think anybody who's ever used a computer will recognise. This one I modelled with thickener after 'folding over' the edges as per a real one... I could have done it a lot faster with a simple box and booleans, but that wouldn't have been much fun now, would it.

All your renders are confusing the children. They don't understand what these things are.

Its funny - I get that exact reaction with kids here. I was kinda shocked when one of the youngest kids here didn't know what a cassette was - then he googled it, and it was 'Oh yeh, those things. I think my dad had some of these a few years back in a box'. THAT is how you realise that you're older then you feel...

    Day 6

And another one to confuse the kids... A whopping 16k of RAM - that's less data then your average image or email these days. In 1981-82, that meant I could play awesome games that I couldn't run in 1k...

I dunno if I like this render - its way too 'CG perfect' for me, but for now I'm happy that I've made it 6 days (94 remaining). I'm gonna start doing a series of '3D' arcade sprites next - that will be a lot faster to do then the more photo real style models (its basically 3D 'pixels' (cuboids, or something along those lines depending on how 'creative' I want to take it)) and I need something fresh so I'm not getting sick of speed modeling and rendering real world objects.

I do post a short blurb under my challenge posts for each image if anybody was bored enough to read my rantings and see what these things were about (for me at least)

This is what it was all about (the ZX81, rampack, etc) for those born in the future (well, not in the 80's).

Ok, so I don't have a lot of time the next few days therefore I'm keeping things simple this time around... Since I have a love of this game, and also an old marquee from the machine sitting on a shelf at home - I thought lets model and render the arcade machine (even though you only see the top of it - so I didn't add the coin slot to the texture map as I wasn't planning on seeing them anyway).

I'll probably look at doing the ZX spectrum and a few other things in the next couple of days since I have built these models already - just a case of composition, lighting and rendering (and probably a bit of re-texturing).

We'll see what happens... Hate it when life starts to interfere with my more important personal CG project time...

These are phenomenal Kev! The trip down memory lane is great anyway and to see the quality of your work at the same time? Retro-heaven! On a similar vein without wishing to derail your thread, at the art school I teach at students were challenged to take a selfie in the four-hour course. The trick? They had to use a film camera, develop the pic, scan it and then print it out from the computer after having "Instagrammed" it. The students had a great time
