3d camera tracking on a budget

    Has anyone tried VooCat?
I need camera tracking badly but don't want to waste time and money on a bunch of so so trackers.
I hear great hints about Syntheyes these days and used in it in the past...
But VooCat is around 100 bucks.
    Anyone?

On a budget? I can't vouch for it since I've never used it, but Blender has a built in camera tracker. Blender is free.

Try Voodoo Camera Tracker. Never used it myself but it's free!

Voodoo is good, but it's dev kinda stopped, i would go with blender instead it offers much more options and plenty of export options.

FYI... I went with VooCat and could not be happier.
The learning curve was flat enough that I was up and running and even working on my first finished shot in under a half hour.

I'll probably pick up Syntheyes later...but not until this program fails me.

Maybe define what 'on a budget' means for you.

3DEqualizer, PFTrack, SynthEyes and Boujou are all very good trackers, though each one will track some shots better or worse than the other.
All those mentioned above might be outside of the single artists budget though.

As an alternative you could buy SynthEyes (i think it's around 500 USD for a nodelocked license, solid solver, good support, excellent exporting features) and Matchmover (free, though heavily outdated when it comes to importing native footage from any camera that's been build in the last 10 years. Abandon-ware basically.)

If you have a bigger budget, go with PFTrack or 3DEqualizer4.

On a side note, try contacting the local resellers for the software, some might offer rental plans.

I'd go for the free option like Walfridson says... MatchMover is now free, and almost identical to Boujou which is still $10,000.

Can't get a huge amount better than that really. Boujou isn't really supported any longer, so if you want something that's still supported, PFMatchit or PFTrack are good 'budget' options.

Well, I've hunted around the Autodesk web site and I cannot find where to download a standalone version of MatchMover. Is it bundled in with Maya perhaps?

Could you provide a link please?

    Cheers,
    Peter

After Effects has a camera tracker built-in with a direct link to Lightwave via the Lightwave's LWtoAE plugin. $20 bucks a month in Creative Cloud. (or $50 bucks a month to get the whole suite of Adobe Tools).

i heard MatchMover isn't all that, hence why AutoDesk dropped it...

    also AfterEffects jitters a lot.

i think Blender had an improved algorithm in version 2.6 (more accurate)

    not sure how voocat compares

    SynthEyes have great tracking results

PFTrack looks nice, but costs €2,500
