It's all about getting a wide dynamic range in your render so that there is detail in the shadows and information in the bright areas, then color correct and grade in post to get the result you want.

Also, you don't have to use it if you just want the standard look, but I recommend always use it anyway because you can easily grade it back to the standard look and you may as well have the option to open up the image.
This is how I understood it vaguely, just couldn't myself sum it up so nicely.

It does if your source and proofer are working in sRGB.

    Exactly.

Glad we agree. But this is all beside the point; as djwaterman and erikals would attest.

just as a caveat: also be aware that the LOFT scene may contain some content which should be licensed to be used. in fact, the artist nowhere specifies if the scene is for commercial reuse or not, so better just use it for your internal tests. for example, i found a dog - "spike dog", visible in frame 9 - which is sold by renderpeople for 39 EUR and is definitely not a free asset. there might be other objects which are illegally incorporated into the scene...

Bummer... I should know by now that I should download things the moment I see them, not leaving them hanging around in 200 open tabs in the browser!
