What is this "IK Plane" thingy you speak of?

I'm a newb (over and over again, it seems) with regards to IK. I'm having the usual newbie "snapping" or "flipping" problems with my IK chains. I've searched the forums and found a couple of threads here and here, but they refer to adding something called an "IK Plane" or "ikplane".

This seems like the only solution, but the tutorial that user "RebelHill" refers to is now behind a paywall.

I'm slowly working my way through the tutorials on line, but haven't found any that actually address this problem. Anybody got any pointers/explanations/helpful hints?

RH's link above includes a list of free tutorials that he's made available. RH Rigging Foundations 11 covers common problems...
RebelHill you are such an awesome Lightwaver and a generous person!

RH, your link is certainly a goldmine of information - do you mind if I ask a very simple question: How do you generate all the lovely blue handles and pyramids and yellow joint spheres and all those things for your rigs? They appear in most of your tutorials but I haven't yet gotten to the part where you explain where those come from. Do all those colorful doodads come from Genoma or are they add-ons or what?

Scratch my previous question. I just downloaded and opened the "RHL_Soldier" rig from your site and I think it's the most complicated LW rig I've ever seen - Your skills are far beyond my meager needs. My big takeaway from this learning experience is that Inverse Kinematics is not the "magic bullet" I previously thought, but has limitations just like keyframing bones in FK. Oh well - learning is a lifelong process and you've taught me a lot! Many thanks!

Whatever skill level there is no stupid question, especially here

What you ask isn't directly the Inverse Kinematics (IK). It's "Null" objects ("CTRL" + "n"). Once the creation panel is open you must click on "Edit". From there you can choose a shape, color, etc... "Null" objects are very useful in "LightWave" (target, controller, etc...).

Yes, I remember reading about them when they first came out (was it in version 9?) and thinking "oh, there's a cool feature I'll never need." Well, times change. Thanks for clarifying!
